    I think it was a budgetary thing. The bird is cheaper to maintain overall, and most of a rescue squadron's budget goes to fuel. As a result, though, their crews get a lot of hours.

    I learned a lot about how flying squadrons work by maintaining their command and control systems.

    Dont forget about the MH-65 that the puddle pirates use for SAR and the Navy used to use the Ch-46 alot for our SAR ops, although I dont know if they still do. I lost a good friend on one that went down one night, they found that the pilots didnt stagger putting on their NVG's and they augured in.

    Navy hasn't had 46's in awhile. I know as far back as 07 timeframe (that's when I really started paying attention to the rest of the Navy) they didn't.

    Well, that's because y'all have a LOT further to go, and you can't just land anywhere you please.

    They also budget for it. In the USAF, if you don't deliver the things that go bang then you're a bus driver. The tanker and airlift guys all chalk that up to jealousy over who gets the better jobs after retirement (lots of airlift and tanker folks in the airlines), but it's still the bomber and fighter guys in charge.

    The rescue folks in the USAF are happy to be there.

    Then there are the special ops guys, who don't think the PAVE LOW is bad-ass enough and want to put more shit on it.
