Are you serious with this? What are you preparing for a zombie horde? Decoys? If someone breaks in and makes it to where you sleep before you wake up I’m sorry but your fucked. If you are lucky and hear it coming and have time to fire which most people hope they never have to do they are not going to stand in your living room and have a shoot out with you. Guns are loud and when you fire them in neighborhoods police come and most likely as soon as they know your aware of them they will run possibly shooting at you and if you shoot them while they are running away you go to prison. Lol 85 rounds with a decoy light ok Steven Seagal

What happens when you’re not home? Food for thought.

The most likely time for a home invasion is 10am to 3 pm. Check out the department of justice statistics. It might change your mind.

I’m not worried about that. My possessions can be replaced, I’m only worried about someone breaking in when we’re home.

We do not have any sort of security, we just bought the house a few months ago. We’re heading up to Lowe’s today to look at the Ring system and some exterior lighting.

If you are proficient with the Glock 17 that is a fine weapon for home defense, plus you already own it. I would also make sure to throw a weapon mounted light on it as well. Another good choice would be a short barreled AR15 of some sort. I see a lot of people recommend the shotgun for home defense, and that is fine, but as a firearms instructor the shotgun is the platform that I see people struggle with the most. It takes a lot of time to become truly proficient with it, although it is truly one of the most versatile weapons in the world with the ability to fire birdshot, buckshot, slugs, and even less lethal.

My home defense for a home invasion is whatever handgun I'm carrying at the time, or a full size handgun if I'm in bed. Due to the large amount of black bear activity in my area (one climbed into my truck bed a while back, and another one climbed on top of my wife's car a few weeks later) I do keep a shotgun handy, typically loaded with the first round as rubber buckshot, followed up by slugs in case they get feisty.

In conclusion if you already have a gun at home that you are proficient with, no need to go out and get another one. Of course if you're like me and are just trying to justify to your significant other another gun purchase, just disregard that last part. ;)

PS: The other thing I wanted to mention that I've seen in this thread already is the noise caused by firing a gun inside your home. It might be prudent to invest a set of electronic hearing protection to keep on your night stand and/or a suppressor if legal in your area.

Yep, you can load it with 38s and plink all day long, then jam it full of some hot loaded 357 magnums and it absolutely becomes a hand cannon.

What I was getting at, and I’m sure you and the queen are not always together 100% of the time, that’s all.

Absolutely, even if you miss a home intruder with the 357s they will probably be deaf and blind, and then you can bludgeon them to death with it as God and Ruger intended.

We moved up here from the city in 2002.

    upload_2020-6-1_8-25-10.jpg

LOL, ok, you caught me. I was being extreme on purpose as a bit of a joke.
Glad you didn't bite. I would have been more worried. I am a gun advocate though.
I also believe in the constitution and our right to bear arms!

I've been woken up from a sound sleep about three times in my life from different things.
Each time the fear was so intense that I immediately froze to the point I couldn't move for
    what seemed like a lifetime.

One of the times, some things I had stacked up in the garage next to the compressor somehow fell over and there was glass that broke.
I can honestly see myself telling an intruder to leave, from behind my locked bedroom door, while I wait for the police, more than anything.

Now, with that said, we both work from home and since most home invasions here occur during the day,
we keep the Arlo running. If I see something fishy, I'm going to confront anyone that seems suspicious.
But yea, no Steven Seagal types here. :spy:

Congratulations, the only thing correct in your post is that it's possible for a rifle or pistol round to go through walls. Please watch some penetration tests and read some actual articles on the subject- a shotgun tends to penetrate further than a 5.56, 9mm, etc. Birdshot is for birds or clays. Period. Birdshot will not reliably do any serious damage "down the hall" and especially at longer distances; the pellets do not have enough mass to carry the kinetic energy needed for penetration. Yes, many of the wounds are nasty looking, but almost without exception, if they are further than essentially point blast range, they are superficial and usually do not remove the person from the fight unless it's a psychological stop. The only people I've seen who died from birdshot took a contact shot, i.e. suicides. It will very effectively remove the top of your head if you properly locate it under your chin, it will also remove just your face and leave a couple of gaping, gasping holes if you flinch. Yes, I've seen both as well as people shot in the back, stomach and limbs- other than the suicides, all of them were very much still alive and lived to walk out of the hospital. Several of them broke off the fight when shot, at least two of them that I can remember fought back with one retrieving his pistol from his bedroom after taking a load of shot in the left arm and one in his left thigh and the other took a load in the stomach and still pursued his attacker out of the house and into the street where he shot the attacker dead with his own pistol. The last part of your reply also tells me that you have never patterned your particular gun with various loads- this is something that everyone using a shotgun should do so that they understand that a shotgun does not open up much at across the room distances (this is actually a good thing but it dispels the point and shoot ideas), different chokes and different loads act differently in different guns, even two of the same model, some are more reliable than others, etc. I have never seen a professional recommendation for anything smaller than #4 buck.

All of that said, yes, a shotgun can be an extremely effective choice if you understand your gun and practice with it. The Mossberg 500 is a tried and true platform; fortunately there are a lot of good choices in guns these days. Whatever firearm you choose OP, the most important thing is to get training and to have a plan before you (hopefully never) need it.
