So, I've been looking at this thread but obviously haven't read every entry. I do have a question, why RTT's as opposed to one on the ground? It would seem they do have some effect on the center of gravity, though how much would vary from tent to tent and vehicle to vehicle. They would also seem to weigh more than a ground tent.

rocks, animals, cant camp in water, (peasants sleep on the ground), dont need to carry tents inside the cab..

I dont know, I could be talking out of my a$$.. But when my ground tent got washed away one night, I decided that I dont want to sleep on the ground anymore.

    So strictly a glamping thing?

No.. it takes what, 5-10+ min to set up a ground tent. Gotta worry about rocks and animals on the ground, etc. If you call that glamping, then ok. But Id rather use my bed for carrying other stuff then a tent in a bag. Also I have an access cab, so limited room inside to carry sleeping bags, clothes for 2 people, and gear that isnt waterproof.

I've always used chapstick no issue.
Lots of other threads on this. A lot is personal preference. If you're doing some wild rock crawling yeah COG is much more important.

Personally I don't ground camp even when on foot. Hammocks are my favorite, but since it's hard to sleep two of us together in a hammock, we prefer the RTT. To me, it's worlds better to set up than a traditional collapsible pole Coleman tent. No roots and stones in my back. Not worried about finding a clear flat spot. The biggest thing for me is that it's more comfortable for my wife so she is more likely to tag along.

welp, I cleaned it off with a brush and water (didn’t want to use vinegar because I was afraid the smell wouldn’t go away). Then hit it with some ski wax (pina colada scented). It’s running smooth now! I like the chap stick idea, might try that next time

No. It's a better way to camp than on the ground

This is why is went with a RTT also. The wife wasn't super into ground camping after a few heavy rain trips and she is definitely happier off the ground. I prefer a ground tent, but with 2 kids and a dog the RTT + annex works much better.

I ground tent camped for 25+ years growing up until last year when I bought my RTT. Started as a kid, now with the wife and dogs it has gotten tiresome to continue with finding a flat spot and setting up. I have had multiple tents collapse due to high winds and heavy rain, get flooded because they are in a low spot. We would sleep on an air mattress which sucks the heat out of you real fast making for super cold nights even when its not that cold outside.

The final "so glad I switched" was a night of 50mph winds and heavy rain. Tent and annex held together like a champ, next morning all the ground tents around us were collapsed and broke. Every single one. Didn't get great sleep that night but didn't have to be woken up by a collapsing tent.

    @JEEPNIK

We got a RTT because we enjoy traveling. We went for a 17 day trip last September and moved everyday. With a wife and daughter moving everyday becomes agonizing. The RTT is easy to set up at dark, can stow bedding and is very comfortable.

We have nice gear too, but for off-road oriented travel a RTT seems like the best bet!

My RTT is new, but will be getting a lot of use!

I used to sleep on the ground, no pad, no tent, no pillow, just a poncho or poncho liner thrown over me.

So if being comfortable and getting a good nights sleep is glamping, then I am glamping the shit out of it.

    This is a good all-in-one: https://www.gearaid.com/products/zipper-lubricant

Or, just clean it with an old toothbrush and maybe a tiny bit of dish soap and then lube with: https://www.gearaid.com/products/zipper-lubricant-wax

i had an RTT coming from a ground tenter. It was great, although the room inside is minimal and the sleeping pads werent as comfortable as my tent set up. Making camping in a rocky area or muddy area was much easier in the RTT but the top heavy feel and driving characteristics on my Long Travel, no sway bar having SUV was not all that fun. Also to carry it 100% of the time when i camp 3% of the time was very annoying. I sold it and am back to a nice canvas ground tent thats held up great against rain/wind/mud and keeps me warmer and more comfortable than before.

Its all what works best for YOU.
