Canadians - Negotiating Truck Price With Dealership

I was wondering if any Canadians had any luck with negotiating a lower price when they bought their truck from the dealership.

My friend and I have gone to a few and they won't move on the price even though he is willing to pay cash.

He walks out the door stating if you are interested in lowering the price then to contact him but so far nothing.

We have the Car Cost Canada reports for the trucks (showing wholsesale price) and he always offers 5% above that price. Even on the 2010's we looked at (one being on the lot for 5 months) they would not move more than $200.

Anybody else have any luck?

Don't say that you want to pay cash. By financing, the salesman will get a commission from the bank or toyota financial.

Only when contract is signed you can pay cash, either to the salesman or directly to the bank by writing a check on the same day or the day after so you won't be hit by the interest.

 

I managed to get like $700 off and a fleece Toyota jacket

 

i managed $750 and a block heater. I also saved tax and install fees on; heated seats, winter tires and rims and a $1600 ecp plan.

It was also 7pm on June 30th when I finally signed.

 

Couldn't move on price but I got a years free (2 oil changes) maintainance and a skidplate.

 

Funny you mention this, and you live in Alberta... I bought my Taco in '08 and at the time I lived in B.C. (Victoria). The Toyota dealers in B.C. wouldn't budge on price, and I walked away frustrated... Pissed off, I did some research, and found "Country Hills Toyota" in Calgary. This place is HUUUUGE!!! So, I emailed them, stating I was interested in buying a Taco, but not paying sticker... Long story short, I got a KILLER deal. Flew to Calgary, and drove the truck back and after all was said and done, I'd saved about $2800 v.s. paying sticker in B.C.

I told the sales rep (he phoned me quickly) exactly what I wanted (built the truck on toyota.com's website, and sent a link) and what I was hoping to pay for it. I told him, no test drives, no bullshit, I just want to come in, and buy the truck. He laughed... Pretty easy deal for him, "of COURSE I'll negotiate on price" he laughed!

It took 6 weeks to get the truck I wanted in, but I was OK with that, wasn't in a rush for it anyway. All in all, a great transaction, and I'm very happy with the $$$ I saved to spend on my Firebird instead!

 

They wouldn't budge very much here in NB either. If it wasn't exactly what i wanted, I would have easily left it. I think I got $500 off, and skid plate, window visors, and bug deflector thrown in.

 

Just made a deal on a leftover 2010, 1K discount from the dealer plus .5K from Toyota as it was last years model, plus a hitch and bug deflector. The big deal was the "just announced today" 1.9% finance rate on all leftover 2010s. Delivery this Friday, wish me luck.

 

This may have been something to do with the fact that I was in my military uniform when I walked in, but I got mine for $500 above dealer cost, I walked in and managed to speak directly to the sales manager.

I'm pretty sure most of the dealerships in bc near the coast are owned by pattison. They have a no negotiation policy. W/e I'd buy it all over again.

 

If i were you, I'd buy at the end of the month. (us salesman get desperate for more deals at the end of the month)
like stated, forget mentioning your paying cash.
talk to the sale's manager, and mention that you don't have any more money that your offer.
lastly, it's not up to you to decide that your gona pay 5% above cost, you can negotiate on the sticker price, but it's kinda rude to just say you want it for 5% above cost.

do you need t buy brand new? you can save a good amount buying just 1 year used, and there is more room to negotiate with used vehicles.

 

That's right. I'm pretty sure they called it "access pricing" and basically, that meant they were NOT willing to negotiate on price whatsoever.

 

Thanks for the tips. Didn't mean for the confusion - he didn't come in with his carcostcanada report in hand stating only 5% above wholesale. He figured it out beforehand and gave them that value as what he wanted to pay.

He doesn't want to buy used (at least of what he's seen) as the used ones are only a few thousand off full price with tax (e.g. a 2004 with 70K for $24K WTF?)

 

Toyota has officially dropped the access pricing especially after CBC Marketplace did an expose on it years ago.

 

Um I'm looking at purchasing a Tacoma in the near future, not much negotiating is not good news haha

Easier to negotiate price down or get stuff thrown in like skid plates etc? Never bought a vehicle new

 

I was looking to buy a clearance 2010 model, but my priorities weren't quite lenient enough.

I wanted:

1. Double Cab
2. Manual Transmission
3. TRD 4x4
4. Full size bed

Firstly, the double cab manuals don't come in a long bed, so I was stuck with the shourt bed (just means I have to sleep diagonally when camping)

Now, the only 2010 DC manual that was left available in Canada was somewhere in New Brunswick, and it would have cost more to ship it in to Alberta, than it would have been to just buy a new 2011 right off the line. So that pretty much sealed the deal for me. And that way, I could also choose which colour I wanted, vs a limited selection.

 

The fact that we can't buy a TRD Off road Double Cab here in Canada even tho they offer it in the states is the most frustrating part of all this. My ideal truck would be a double cab TRD offroad......oh well, settle for access cab haha
