If you are at a dead stop you have about 50/50 odds of the gears lining up correctly for the truck to shift into 4lo. If it doesn't shift into lo range you can usually let off on the brakes and let the truck roll slightly to move the gears a bit in the drivetrain. It only takes few inches. Technically you should be able to make the shift in Park, but Neutral works best for me so I can easily let the truck roll slightly.

I've also found it best to shift into 4X4 hi range while on the move first. After in 4X4 I'll stop, go to neutral and then make the shift to lo range if needed. Once again is should work to go straight from 2hi to 4lo. But I've just encountered fewer issues by breaking it down into 2 steps instead of asking the transfer case to do 2 things at once. I do the same getting back to 2hi. I'll stop, shift from 4lo to 4hi then get back in gear and start driving. Once underway I'll then shift on the fly back to 2hi.

Yeah. Not like it was the first time I tried this. Worked flawlessly every time before. But then I forgot where the hood latch release is located the other day, so who knows.
