suspension and coil overs

hi Tacomaworld!
so im adding suspension. about a 3 inch because i still need to fit under my door.
question is do i really need larger springs and or coil overs?
I ride about 1000 miles a year of dirt road and like to drive fast.
I used to have donahoe in the past.
my mechanic said dont waste your money on bigger springs if its just a 3 inch lift...
any idead? im thinking ICON because they used to be donahoe but also revtek with extra shox with resevoirs? are resevoirs really worth it if im not doin baja?

mechanic is sayin just a simple revtek lift with 5100's...

 

Define "necessary". What do you want the truck to DO?

I did a 3" with remote resi Icons all around because I wanted this truck to stand up to any pounding I would put it through without blinking.

If it's going to be babied, you'd be fine with something like OME or Toytec. If you're broke and don't care about a shitty ride, there's always spacers.

The BEST way to do a 3" lift on these trucks is COs...but not everyone needs best.

 

i dont do a lot of heavy 4 wheelin/4 low gear stuff... mostly just shitty dirt roads, pot holes while fast driving...about 1000 clicks a year

 

I like your susp set up jandrews.. what did it cost? and how are your km2 in the rain?
I had them on my old taco and was slick but attributed it too the light back end...
anyone have ideas the best place to shop in the bellingham area? does this stuff ever go on sale?

 

Expensive. COs, Shocks, AAL, and UCAs were about 2400 altogether. I did the install myself. Expect to shell out for 2 or 3 alignments over the next couple months after you install to get your specs dialed in.

I couldn't tell you about rain because I've had the setup on for 4 days and it hasn't rained yet. TRAC has been excellent in rain and snow in the past however, keeping the ass-end very much in check.

 

I pushed it a little too far with the km2s a couple weeks ago. I was taking a left hand turn at like 11 at night onto the expressway and ended up backwards in the dirt. Just drive it a little easier then you would a normal street tire.

That is an excellent kit, but I would note:

Icon UCAs are much more expensive for almost no performance difference compared with TC, Built Right, etc.

I would try to find an Icon kit without the UCAs and AAL and buy those separate...and save the dough.

Alternatively, if you want to spend the same amount, buy TC UCAs and get leaf packs instead of AALs.

You dont have to get it from icon, but to get a good 3 inch lift with proper alignment you need: Coilovers, UCAs, new rear shocks, An AAL or a new leaf pack

 

Slow down. Take your time. Research this. We're talking about serious change here.

Icon makes awesome products all around. EVERYTHING they make is good. However, you can get some things for a lot less than are 99.9% as good or better in some ways.

Example: Icon billet control arms are about a grand. Total chaos control arms are $650ish. The difference in performance is almost nil. There is no justification for the extra cost of the Icons, other than the fact that they're manufactured in a much more expensive way.

Icon makes great suspension products. King makes great suspension products. Fox makes great suspension products.

Search the forums. Get input from people running each. Learn about some of the problems with lifting (carrier bearing and driveshaft vibes, harsh CV angles, alignment issues, etc.)

This is not something you want to jump into unprepared.
