Why not drive a few hours to the states?

I paid $13,000.00 less then my local dealer wanted for my brand new Tacoma. (Access Cab 4x4, TRD Offroad with skid plate etc. roughly $28,000 Cnd sitting in my driveway).

Crossing the border was easy, and the warranty is still valid.

That's quite a good point, but a little hard from Edmonton (for me)

I drove 8 hours to pick up mine, well worth making a weekend out of it in my books.

My cousin bought an Audi S5, flew to Florida and drove it back. Made a vaction out of it.

We also bough a Nissan Altima, almost $11,000 difference sitting in the driveway.

Just something else to think about. I found US dealer's quite different to deal with. Way more competitive with each other and way more willing to negoiate.

My wifes Honda Civic which we bought in Canada (Honda viods the warranty if you buy from the US) we spend half the day argueing with the dealer over a bug deflector and door mats. Such a different experience then when I went to the States.

What dealership did you use and how did you find out they would sell new to Canadians? I've bought used in the US (a Nissan) but heard that most dealerships won't sell new to Canadians because they would get in trouble with Toyota.

The dealership I used was in PA, as they were relatively close to my house. I just called a few dealers (3 in total). 2 would not sell to Canadians, the 3rd said no problem. As I indicated above, dealers seemed more willing to go the extra mile to make a sale.
Worst come to worst, you could buy a slightly used one is need be.

Nissan was no issue, they were allowed to sell to Canadians, the dealer I used was 1.5 hrs away in Buffalo. They were selling tonnes of cars to Canadians and even looked after all the paper work etc. The only thing with Nissan is if the car was less then 6 months old then the warranty is viod. To me the saving were well worth the risk of having no warranty on a new one.

Toyota, the warranty is good, regardless of wether it was brand new or used.

For those in Ontario, Quebec or B.C. - join the APA and take advantage of their new vehicle buying service.
    www.apa.ca

Got my 2009 way lower than MSRP with additional bartering.

I didn't talk to him specifically, but when I walked into Sherwood Park Toyota (in my military unform) I was just bounced around from one salesman to the next without getting any solid info. And the price I did get from them for a base model, is only ~500 difference than what I got for exactly the truck I wanted new with a full 84 month warranty AND a canopy

I got a dealer who I've been in contact with here near Ottawa who claims to be giving me 2.5% above cost. The truck:

    2011 TRD offroad

    Price quoted:

    32,375 Cost + 2.5 %

    1,560 Freight

    100.00 A/C Tax

    35.20 Enviro Charge

    34,070.20

    + HST

    ----------------

    38,499.33

Less new grad rebate 565 (thought it was 500, am I missing something?)

    ---------------------

    37,934.33 All in price

Is this accurate, I still have to go to a few more dealers and see what prices they can give me but out of curiosity is that 2.5% actually above cost or not (not sure if you can disclose that info being salesman....unless of course you're not a Toyota salesman haha)

APA actually worth it? anyone else use it?

APA - if you talk to the guys on Redflagdeals.ca they love it

I think the price you are getting is pretty good. You can check out carcostcanada if you want to make sure but it costs about $30 for 10 or so invoide reports.

I vowed never to buy a toyota in canada because of the high price tag. I researched importing a car and decided to do it, until i couldn't get a dealer willing to sell me a new one. Frustrating. They are ridiculously inexpensive in the US and with the dollar at par...
I almost bought a colorado fully loaded with a v8 for 34 ish but te rating were so bad i couldn't justify that. Also got close to buying a ram crew cab sxt for around 34ish, but didnt want something that couldnt fit in the garage.

Mine was an impulse buy, we had a baby and needed to buy something I picked it up on the way home from work. Im in the military too but in Montreal, no one knows shit about us.

Im not completely happy with my tacoma. It wasn't what i really wanted. But then again there arent any other 'compact' 4 door pickups on the market besides the colorado.

Ill sell it as soon as one comes up. I really wanted one with a 4 cyl manual. That will have to happen oncegas prices hit their mark of 2 bucks a litre.

See if you can get a better deal than that -- I didn't have the grad rebate and I still got a lower price than you quoted for the 2011 TRD O/R.

Will do, that's good to know thanks. I haven't shopped around much yet, been busy with work and such. Might have to put off truck buying until December so I'll revisit when the time comes.

All of the dealers in BC have an agreement (for years), that they will not negotiate off of msrp. The best you will get off is a few hundred in accessories.
Do what I did - buy new in the USA. I saved thousands and got a trd sport crew with a shortbox and aut, that is not available in canada :D

All righty then....sorry, just shake my head when our friends in B.C. complain about not being able to negotiate when APA is in that province. Here are the details when I got my APA quote back in 2009:

    MODEL YEAR: 2009
    MAKE: TOYOTA
MODEL: TACOMA 4x4 Access Cab V6
    Standard Transmission

    Dealer Prices MSRP: (sticker)
    Base Price Manual: 27,410
    SR5 Power Package Manual: 29,430
    TRD Offroad Package Manual: 33,475
    Freight/PDI 1,270

    Dealer Invoice Prices:
    Base Price Manual: 25,477
    SR5 Power Package Manual: 27,174
    TRD Offroad Package Manual: 30,580

    APA Member Price calculation:
APA Member Mark-up Over Invoice 900.00
Freight and PDI 1,270 (NOTE- even freight/pdi charges are
    negotiable)
    Federal Air Conditioner Tax 100.00
    Ontario Gas Tax 0 0
Administration Fee 0 (refuse to pay this!)
    APA Referral Fee 65.00

Add Dealer Invoice price, plus the APA member Markup, plus Freight/PDI, plus APA fee,
plus taxes applicable to your province for final price.

Using the APA new vehicle buying service, you are guaranteed this price at a dealer who is associated with APA. On this purchase, did not use the APA dealer, but using information got better price on purchase and trade in.
