Help me with TPMS

I have a 2018 tacoma and recently learned more about TPMS and that I can't just push the little button under the steering wheel to reprogram.

What is the best option for me to reprogram the TPMS each season on my own and not taking it to a shop.

These all seem to be the most affordable. or any others?





Other car companies have these little cheap ones but i don't think any of them work with tacomas.

i am interested in this too, i have been doing some research, it appears the autel ts508 is what does it all but, comes at a cost. hoping those that know will chime in and help you, i, and others. Ski

TS401, but it only scans the sensors for the IDs. To program the ECU with the IDs, you also need the ATEQ Quickset or Toyota Techstream.

The ATEQ Quickset can program the ECU, but cannot scan the sensors for the IDs. You either must already know the TPMS IDs, or use a TPMS scanner to obtain the IDs.

So I just picked up an Autel TS501 - it reads out the sensor IDs, no issue. You can use that tool to clone a new TPMS sensor, but you are limited to using Autel sensors, which are pretty pricey compared to some others.

I'm in the process of trying out another idea - the TS501 can get me the ID info I need, but I still need to clone the sensors. I went ahead and bought this:

It was $50 through Amazon, but it looks like they are out of stock at the moment. Hopefully I didn't buy the last one.

Either way, that programming pad can clone Alligator sensors, which come in all different varieties (315 and 433 MHz, rubber or clamp in stems). Those sensors are pretty reasonably priced too...about $27.50 per sensor for my application.

Worst case, I guess I will have wasted the money, but I can still buy the Autel sensors and just clone them to match.

TS501 and 508 are still both current models...the 501 does nearly all that the TS508 does, minus a quick start function that didn't seem all that helpful. The 501 most definitely has a full color screen.

 

The Autel sensors are not that much more, $4.50, and they are dual band.

I keep reading not so great things about the "one sensor to rule them all" when I looked around...maybe I shouldn't believe the hype? It just didn't give me a warm fuzzy that they have these things down 100%, but then again, it could be user error when it comes to them not working.

It's not like there's too much to them...they just need to quack like the correct duck, and the vehicle shouldn't care. Either way, I have two Alligator sensors for another one of my vehicles that's going to be my test case for cloning. I'm curious to see if the Autel scanner can read them correctly once I've cloned them. If that doesn't work, I'll probably just order 4 of the Autel sensors when I go to do a wheel swap on my Tacoma.

Autel TS501 read them both correctly, so now I'm waiting on 4 of the blank 315MHz Alligator sensors that I will clone the same way for my Tacoma.

 

I need one of these too for my 370Z. Discount Tire does it for free but it's always a hassle. It'd be nice to have this for when you want to switch out with your stockers.

I can now verify 100% that what I did works for cloning the original TPMS sensors.

What I did:

1. Read out the current sensors with the

$199 Autel TS501 TPMS Programming Tool, 2024 Upgraded Car TPMS Scan Tool of TS408, TS401, Activate/Relearn All Known TPMS Sensors, Program Autel MX-Sensor [315 & 433MHz], TPMS Diagnostics & Reset

2. Copy ID information down
3. Program new Alligator sensors (part number 590882) with Alligator Sens.it programming pad (part number 590922)
4. Install new sensors in wheels
5. Have tires remounted

Notes:

- The original sensors operate on 315MHz
- The IDs are in hex (base 16) - as an example, one of mine was D1ED1D5. They were all 7 digits long. Valid hex numbers can include the characters 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F.
- I took the new wheels with new sensors in the back of my truck to get mounted - this threw a TPMS light in the truck. Cloned sensors that read 0 psi in the same vicinity as the existing sensors will confuse the system. That light will stay on until you can physically separate the two sets of sensors. Once separated, the TPMS light should go off within about 1/4 of a mile or so, provided you programmed everything correctly.

My TPMS light is off at this time, indicating that everything works exactly as it should. I did not have to interface with the truck's TPMS module at all to make this method work.

This process should also work just fine using Autel sensors, which the TS501 can program.

received the autel 508 today, tried to read/program the new oem sensors i had, wouldnt read them, even after selecting tacoma. did all the firmware updates, and tried again, tacoma now gone off the toyota list in autel. selected camry as they have the same sensor, tried to read them... wouldnt read/program/store them. i hate this shit, it should be a lot easier than it is. My understanding of the Autel tools is that they can only program Autel sensors. If you are trying to use it to program other brands of sensors (which would include the OEM sensors), that's a no-go. My

TS501 has no problems reading out already programmed sensors, regardless of brand. If the sensors you have are not already programmed, I can see that being an issue as well. I'm not sure how that would show up in the scanner. If they came with a pre-programmed code (it'll be stamped on the sensor itself), it should read them just fine. Not sure why they wouldn't include Toyota anymore on their list.

 

ended up going into the settings, found it had updated to euro specs, made the change to u.s market, bam, tacoma was back. they already have the hex codes, i just want to store them in the unit, to program the ecu when swapping between wheel sets. still have some figuring out to do. Ski

 

When you select Tacoma, there should be more options to select the year range, and type of wheel (alloy or steel). You have to narrow it down to read the TPMS module.

 

wheels and tires on truck, used autel 508 to do a obd program, worked like a charm. took a bit, and you have to fidget with it a bit but, that is just getting used to the tool. no more trips to the tire store, or dealer. will pay for itself, for sure. Ski
