    Well that freakin' sucks. That was one of the main reasons I built the Creedmoor since there was a 1000 yard range in driving distance. It's about a 2-2.5+ hour drive for me I'm guessing. I've never been there, but I was looking forward to it. I guess I'll have to be happy with 600 yards, but I really wanted to be able to say I put rounds on target at 1000 yrds. Still, I guess if I get good at putting them in the X-ring at 600 yards, the transition to 1000 will be that much easier if I ever manage the chance.

    While I understand that a 1000yd shot is unlikely given Florida's terrain, it's disappointing that you can't find a range for that. In Kentucky where I grew up and in Oklahoma where my mom worked for awhile they had public accessible 1000 yard ranges.

    That makes me want to own acreage that my friends and I can shoot distance like that so for that once a year trip, we can show up dialed in.

    I was going to ask why a 1000 yrd shot would be unlikely due to the terrain in Florida...it's flat as a pancake. There should be a 1000 yrd ranges all over the place. Then I realized, you meant a 1000 yard hunting shot. You're definitely right about that. Ironically, I understand that in Baker, FL (where ever that is, I haven't bothered to look it up yet) there's a group that trains people for long range 1k+ shots for the Precision Rifle Series competitions...or the long range hunting shot.

    Haha, I've been a target shooter for so long I forget sometimes that people go to the range for reasons other than just to cull the paper herd. Especially ironic because I only go to the pistol range to improve my proficiency and muscle memory in case I have to defend me and mine with a handgun.

    Yes a 1000 yard hunting shot in Florida is very unlikely, yet that doesnt mean people wouldn't like to train for it.

    My FIL's hunting lease has a 1000 yard range cap that is looking more and more like it serves it's value before killing anything. Looking to join this fall.

    But later in life, I invision building a Creedmor Rifle, flying with it out west, and hunting out there. I want to know before I travel that my scope is somewhere on the map.

    Having a 100 yard range in my dad's back yard makes one a little spoilt on the diffculties of sighting something new in.

    If you plan on hunting out west, you would probably be better served by building a .338 Lapua Mag or a .300 Win Mag rather than a 6.5 Creedmoor. The 6.5 might have the range, but I don't think it will do immediately lethal damage to game the size of an Elk or a bear. I've heard most guides won't take anyone that shows up with less than a .30 cal. It would suck to have to slog a 1000 yards just to start tracking a wounded animal that got gawd knows how far by then.

    Dads back yard. This is over a year ago. But it backs up to a Wildlife reserve that will never get built on. I'm super jealous of being able to plink before breakfast.

    Modern day .600 Nitro Express. :thumbsup: I doubt I'd be able to afford to feed a .416 Barret. Wouldn't mind shooting one though.

    Every once in awhile Dad pulls out his bolt action Barrett .50. There's little need in Florida except for the novelty of it.

    But that isn't what I want to drag out west with me one day.

    I've never shot anything bigger then my 45-70, caliber wise. Any of the Nitro's or similar rounds are incredible, 575 grain bullet flying 25-2800 fps, kerpow, talk about hiting hard down range.

    That's about the biggest think I've shot too (not counting 12 ga 3" mag slugs). My old man made a 45-70 Gov't carbine out of an old military bolt action (I can't recall what exactly other than it was foreign). It packed a punch, but I'm pretty sure my .338 Win Mag had it beat for heaviest recoil I've ever shot. I used to shoot that thing at Dade City. No muzzle brake or anything, just a bone stock Ruger M77 with the "heavy" 24" barrel option (not that the barrel was what I would call "heavy") and every time I sent a round down range, dust would sift down from the ceiling and heads would pop up up and down the firing line. It definitely made its presence known with some authority.

    I always thought what would make an interesting combination would be a 10mm/.400 caliber (not a .416) spitzer bullet stuffed into a necked up Remington Ultra Mag case. Probably beat the snot out of ya, but it'd be cool. Makes me wonder what effects chamber pressure more: length or diameter?

    458 Winchester, almost bought a 3 shot bolt action in that caliber many moons ago, crazy I even thought about it. Good for Moose and above.... .338 Lapua is a formidable round, fast and flat.

    Volusia county gun club has a 300yd range On site and access to a 1000yd range. You do have to prove yourself on the 300 range first . I was a member there but never investigated far enough to find out about the 1000yd range .

    Yeah, the .458 mag is pretty much a straight walled cartridge though. I would go with a .338 Lapua Mag if I ever found myself in need of a heavy cartridge. My bone stock Ruger M77 .338 Win Mag was a 1 MOA rifle with Federal Premium .230gr Nosler Partition factory ammo. I just think a .400 (or 10mm) Ultra Mag would be a cool cartridge. It'd fit in a short action and hopefully perform like a magnum cartridge. It would have to have heavy VLD bullets for it to really be impressive.

    Yeah it got nautical over here for a while. The storm with the tornado warning went right over us. Amazing the energy that little cell was putting out .
