It's like a bike helmet in as much as both will be crushed after an accident and need to be replaced. He trusted the OEM thing a bit more after seeing that it was attached to 2 bars which reinforce it some and thinks the skid would bend a bit less because of those. Hope that makes sense; I am lacking the right vocabulary.

The fuel tank has what looks like a plastic cover to "protect" it. All that stuff seems like its just there to give warning when you start scraping on hard things but not meant as actual armor.

I've got to draw the line somewhere. I am not in a position right now to be able to pay for full under body protection just as insurance when my skid "sheet" hasn't touched anything at all yet.
Where I live it's far more likely that I'd get stuck in sand somewhere and I think I should focus on that first.

Nailed a hidden boulder at 20ish. Imagine if this was the stock skid, holy crap.

this wasn’t me, but one of mobtowns skids.

OP, a steel IFS skid is like $300 shipped and weighs about 60 lbs. That is a negligible amount of weight that low. I’m not saying go buy a full trilogy and slap skids everywhere you possible can, but a front one is a must imo. Plus, makes jacking up the front end easier because you can just roll the floor jack anywhere under there.

And I'll try super-hard not to hit any rocks at 20 mph for the time being.

A “hidden boulder”?! Those two words don’t even go together. Come on... Magic isn’t real, dude. :D

You either see it or you don’t, and I’m guessing the guy didn’t run into it intentionally. Therefore, hidden.

I politely disagree. “Hidden boulder” is misleading, as if it’s not the drivers fault. It sounds like you’re blaming the boulder for someone else’s mistake. The boulder was always there. He apparently wasn’t paying attention & hit it. His fault, not the boulders. I mean, it’s a “boulder”. If you don’t have a skid plate, don’t hit a boulder. Hell, even if you do have a skid plate, don’t hit a boulder.

How do you know he wasn’t driving through a grassy field and the Boulder was hidden? The point I’m trying to make is shit happens. If OP is doing enough off roading to warrant sliders, and says he plans on going down roads/trails quickly, a front skid plate is warranted too in my opinion.

Just make sure he doesn't show up with a car battery coat hanger and jumper cables.
