Yes, but I haven't built my data cable yet so it isn't connected to the radio.

Per the suggestion of KM4ACK, I have the Sabrent sound card. I have 3.5mm TRRS plugs and a 6-pin mini DIN cable I chopped up for my TM-V71A. All parts are on hand, I just need to assemble.

I'm also thinking about my power source still I'm using a 100AH SLA battery right now since I already own it but considering a LiFePo battery or Li-Ion.

I *think* this is the one I ordered. You'll need to double check the dimensions though:

Sorry. Never answered this. When you connect the data cable the 3kw scope will appear

Now if you want a panadapter you can get an rsp1a and put it in a switch to disconnect when you TX.

Looking to buy a setup capable of APRS. Is it worth getting the Kenwood 710G over the V71, is it that much more work to make the V71 APRS compatible? After doing so, is the price point comparable between the two anyhow? Do I need a tablet to view APRS data/send messages regardless of which radio I choose? I thought I'd read something about swapping the 710 face onto the V71, is that an economical solution? I am absolutely new to this but I know I want to have APRS functionality and transmit at the same time.

Piece of cake. It's just time or money. Not much of either I might add

I'll see if I can't find the switch for you. My buddy Dave put one into his and it works great. Instead of hacking up the radio and soldering a tap, you can just get an rsp1a and have it switch. Pretty clean.

I had just read this post, seems like you're a fan of the 71 over the 710? Tablet/phone is only necessary for either radio to view APRS data, correct?

Beat me to it! Over great distance doesn't much matter but local a 90* tilt would be an asset!

Only need it if you want to see the APRS data on a map. You can send and receive APRS on the d710 and see location and direction on the d710 screen. Messages also come in on the screen.

You'll need a device to generate the signal, it gets sent to a tnc device, then the device triggers the ptt and uses the radio to transmit its signal.

I have nothing against the D710. I wish I had one. But I'd still have to add to it so I could use with with a screen, which is my preferred method.

I couldn't care less about selecting a call sign and having my radio "automatically" switch the vfo to it.

It's a feature I'd never use even if I had it. But the screen interface I use daily.
