Ah I gotcha! I agree with you there. It goes along with “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

I put my torch at a hard angle to the frame so if I cut too deep it’s into the mount I’m removing. I point it straight at the frame when I’m doing cam tabs to melt the plug welds out

I’ll have to try that next time. Have you tried and air hammer on the alignment mounts? Rips them right off and then just grind those plug welds smooth

It’s great. Then hit each mount with a flap disc makes it smooth and prepped for weld.

Gotta remember all the benefits too though. Once you factor in the TSP (both in expense ratios and the matching), leave, medical, ect. Course some jobs in the pipeline stuff offer benefits too, we have gotten quite a few welders who took the "paycut" for the benefits and the job security.

Norfolk is sadly one of the least paid shipyards. But also a pretty cheap area to live. But yeah it really takes getting pipe quals and seal qauls so you bump up to the WG-11

Got any info on the seal quals and where to find all the different WG/WS stuff? I’m still new to shipyard lingo.

The easiest way to find the WG/WS stuff is ask your supervisor. Its easy to find the local stuff on the intranet. To find other shipyards stuff can be a bit of a pain (compared to the GS scale). Usually just google "Norfolk Wage grade" and you should have it show up in the first result or to. or "Portsmouth Wage Grade".

As for the Seal Weld (and nuc piping) not sure I can really help you as all our paperwork for it is classified and in local manuals. (we have our own, norfolk has their own, portsmouth their own...all similar just local deviations). But its all fairly basic stuff. Like pipe is mostly butt welds with consumable inserts (EB Rings) or sockets. Seals would be after being nuc pipe qualed. Most of its CRES 304 or Inconel. The hardest part with it is just the fit up crap really. That and welding in crappy spots. All TIG. Itll depends on the exact system/plan but its all just a ton of inspections. Tacks get a 5x, root gets a 5x/maybe PT, mid might get vt, final gets 5x/PT and then RT. Shipboard joints you get to do a "mockup" first that gets sent out to RT and macro

Im sure theres similarities to outside quals, but being the NAVY they like to name them their own thing lol.

I now understand why dies are so expensive. It’s just a massive, solid hunk of machined steel. This thing weighs 47 lbs.

So I couldn’t resist and just pulled the trigger on the 255... I had a chance to use it and the plasma arc is insane! Now hopefully I can contain my excitement until the end of the week!
