So I went down the path, as many others on here have, of replacing the stock speakers in my 3rd Gen 2020 TRD Sport because the factory installed ones are absolute crap. I know they want you to upgrade to the JBL system so that's why they must put these paper speakers in, but I am embarrassed for Toyota that they would go this cheap. Honestly, that's my only real complaint about the truck!
I got the dash tweeters (Subaru) from Amazon
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PV6F8I2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got the front (JBL) and back (Kicker) door speakers from Crutchfield
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_109CT9631G/JBL-9631.html
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_20646CC674/Kicker-46CSC674.html

Everything was plug and play and fantastic! Thank you to everyone that has posted in the past helping me make this decision.
Look at the difference in the front door speakers alone...

Full disclosure, I bought sundown speakers for the dash from WoofersEtc, but they were on back order and I got impatient.
Turns out they were not plug and play. So I thought I would make them plug and play in case I need them or a buddy would want them. I'm no professional and I'm sure others would do better but I was just having fun tinkering. and they work great. I plugged them to make sure. Still need a mod for the holes to line up on the mount.
Here are the steps it took...

My stereo system sounds amazing now! What a complete and undeniable difference.

I guess I would. As long as you are ok with figuring out the mounting situation. I think all you would need is a short mending plate or joining strip from Lowes or Home Depot to make up the distance to the dash hole.

What harness did you use for the rear? Or did you splice? Crutchfield said they don’t have a harness for the rear yet.

Glad you asked... I forgot I did this.
I wanted to retain the trucks factory wiring so I literally cut the connector out of the old speaker and spliced the new speaker wires to that connector. That way it just plugged into the truck's harness.

Just picked up a 2020 TRD off road.. was happy to see the front speakers have not changed.. I'm starting to gather some additional parts as well as reclaim some from the previous truck.

Total (not including the extra unused sundowns) was $253.26. That included all 6 speakers and a $10 trim/panel tool kit which was helpful.
I recommend doing it. Best money I have spent on the truck so far.

Helpful hint, for people like me that haven't dealt with trim very much, there are white clips in the door panels that are V-shaped. When you take the panel off, if the clip is in the door, take it out and put it back on the panel before putting the panel back on. You will thank me later.

I thought to start in either 2018 or 2019 and beyond all TRD Sports and Off-Roads automatically came with the JBL upgrade, meaning JBL had become part of the actual pkgs. I know b4 that the "premium" pkg added JBL.
I'm not promoting that Toyota JBL system, it's not very good, just confirmation on what I thought is incorrect or correct.

I just picked up the 2020 TRD off road without the JBL..as I will be upgrading the stereo anyway. The JBL system is in the package with the sunroof and it adds quite a bit of cost to the package the way they have it bundled.

I felt the same way. I didn't need all the extra expense for a simple upgraded stereo.
After changing speakers out I feel like I made the right decision.

I had the whole thing re worked in my 2015 access cab.. I'm looking to part off the sub but I can't put a for sale thread up as I am too new of a member. It was a pretty fun build and the results well worth the work

No, with the 2020 you have to upgrade to the technology package (I think that's what they called it) to get the JBL system. It comes with a sunroof and other pricey additions.

3rdGenDC, Great post. I plan on following your lead and doing the same thing. So the only thing you did was change speakers? Stock head unit, no amp just speakers correct? I'm new to this so what is your parts list (speakers and quantity) sorry if that's a dumb. All I l know its that the stereo system sounds like complete S#$T and needs to be upgraded.

@Rob . Swapping the crappy stock speakers out is certainly the first order of business.. These speakers have been a joke since I got into the Tacomas in 2009. They are pretty much the same as they were back then. The only real difference I have seen in the JBL "premium" sound system is different color sponge around the drivers.. and what they call a Sub is pretty much a round version of the front speakers.. Truly pathetic. Bang for the buck switching out the factory speakers is a really wise start.

Was this the harness for the front door?

Yep, only things I changed were the speakers.

front (JBL) and back (Kicker) door speakers from Crutchfield
They sent the mounting brackets for both sets of speakers and the wire harness for the front door speakers for free with the purchase
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_109CT9631G/JBL-9631.html

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I0SUZOY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When I ordered my speakers there was no wire harness for the back door speakers. So, in my case I cut the harness off the factory speakers and spliced it to the new speakers. That way any future changes, if needed, would still be plug and play to the trucks factory wiring.

If any of the speakers listed are out of stock, just use Crutchfield's speaker matching options on their site to find all options that fit your truck make/model/trim level.
