I don't understand something, why does everyone hide there plates when they post a pic of there truck. It's not like you don't drive by countless people every day that can see your plates, so what gives?

I suppose it could help conceal a persons identity on the board. I don't want someone running me down out on the road because I made a bad post.:D

Lets say I put a new lift, rims and tires on my truck and I live in a state that doesn't protect a person's DMV records (Oregon's used to be public) and I'm so proud that I post a picture on TW. Some asshole thief is cruising the boards, sees the pic, runs the plate and is now able to shop for the latest bad ass rims and tires. One stop shopping.

There are also quite a few LEO's here who have access to look up your plate.

As you know, they work for The Man and are out to get us all! This is why I would hide my plate. :D

I figure it's the other way around.

I trust all you guys - you're taco enthusiasts like me.

But say I drive by some psycho on the road he decides he doesn't like me, my truck, or the way I drive it. DMV won't give him any info from my plate. I wouldn't want my plate numbers on here so that he'd have some additional way to google me up.

Once its out there you can't get it back. Is it likely to cause you a problem? Not likely... especially if you're like the slight majority of people that don't go searching out trouble. But I have run into a few of you from the forum in public here. What if we had some forum rage going? Would I be comfortable? Would I worry about someone keying my car? unlikely scenario, but once its out there, you can NEVER EVER get it back. Its cataloged and cached somewhere pretty much instantly. I've tracked back forum names to real people before wondering if they were who they said they were. Its too easy to jump from one seemingly innocent bit of information to another to another. Hell I made my living at it for 20 years... and there are hundred of thousands that did/still do. You'd be amazed what you can figure out if you're trained to glean info or just good at it. Right old 98s/97s and 35s and all you other branch spooks?

Don't offer info that people don't need. Its just smart. You wouldn't put your personal info on facebook would you?

Come on, practice good opsec... ha.

My "panties" aren't all bunched up, someone asked a question and I answered it. I don't blur my plate number on my truck, I was explaining why some people do.

It's all about privacy. Like others have said, some states let you look up info on the owner by license plate. Yes, you drive by hundreds of people each day, but the chances are that they don't give a shit. However, this is the internet, MILLIONS of people can view everything on this forum. Sure, I trust the majority of you because we all share a common hobby/interest, but this is an open forum without any privacy. That means you don't have to be a member to browse the forum. ANYONE can browse the forum and photos posted. Here are the top reasons to hide your plate:

    1. Joey CarThief wants to steal a Tacoma. He googles Tacomas and comes across TW. He searches TW for "Pics" and finds a thread called "Post your heavily modified bad ass Taco Pics!!!!!!11!" He can go through the thread looking at the hundreds of pics and then has his pick of whatever Taco he wants to steal. Thanks to our locations, he can also rule trucks out that might be too far away. But if all the plates are hidden, then he will have a harder time finding our trucks.

    2. You get into a heated argument with someone on TW about chrome vs. black and what you don't realize is that the dude arguing for chrome might not be 100% stable. He looks up your pics, comes to your house, kills you, rapes your body and offs himself. The paper reads "Lover's Quarrel Ends In Murder Suicide" and forever you are remembered as the closet homo that wasn't man enough to be the pitcher.

    3. Some of these threads I've seen people post pics of their houses, home entertainment systems, etc. Burglar or an asshole TW member sees the nice house. Then he sees that you're going to be out of town going to a TW meet and thanks to your plates, he visits your home while you're gone, robs you and rubs his nuts on your toothbrush.

Are any of these likely? Who knows, really? People were using Facebook, Twitter and FourSquare updates to find out when people weren't at home so they could rob them. How likely did anyone think those were before they happened? Any of those 3 could happen, so why not take the extra 2 minutes to be safe?
