Tacoma 1995-1999 Borla Cat-Back

Looking to possibly get the Borla 14597....Around $485 shipped. Anyone have this setup? Only problem I see is getting the nuts/bolts off between the converter and exhaust pipe

I would get a new OEM converter gasket/bolts/nuts and 02 downstream

 

Zip disc cut them right off .

I used to break them off that got to be to much work.

replaced the rotted through OEM about 14 months ago
paid mechanic $150 to install, it was worth every penny, the truck returned to tipTop with HP gains and so quiet my dog could no longer hear me driving up in the evening lol

its been through one mild salty winter and i have checked for corrosion, no sign of it yet!

i am currently contemplating getting a different exhaust tip though, it just seems to look off i think
it has a million mile warranty to boot

I really like mine, I ended up replacing the stock exhaust manifolds, while attempting to remove and replace a split crossover pipe, and the manifolds didn’t fare very well through the procedure.
The only drama I had was going from the TRD header to the cat back with out throwing a wheelbarrow full of money at an OEM cat, found a Walker and tried various step down band clamps and such. Ended up dropping it off at a shop in Fairbanks, a 2-1/2 hr drive while I flew outside for a week and came back paid them and drove it home. Moral of the story, if you can , take it to a good muffler shop... and get new hangers.
It wasn’t quite as easy a installing a 4” SS exhaust by MBRP from the turbo back to the tip on my diesel, that fit like a glove, the TRD header outlet flange was clocked at 1 & 7 O’clock, so I had to get a loose flanged cat for the Taco.

Great sound, and a bit more pickup, or maybe that was due to the upgrade to a salvage 3.4L they both happened in the same time period. Still I like the look and function...

 

As for the OEM bolts/nuts that connect the converter to the exhaust pipe....should I go stainless (if not OEM) and if so, what size are the bolts and nuts?

3. Suspension Stabilizer Bar Link Nut (2) Part # 90177-A0004
   

 

I would go stainless, the kit came with some and extras never go bad....
Go with the serrated flanged nuts if you can find them.
Not sure about the size, it was a few years ago, I’m old and have slept a few times since then....
Maybe take your truck to Ace Hardware and do some parking lot comparisons, they will generally let you try stuff out.

 

These are the only extra parts on mine that the shop had to use that was not with the borla kit

The nuts for the 02 sensor were included with the Borla kit?

 

that's a good question! it has been around 15 months ago when i unpacked it so all i can remember is a small package of some misc. parts came with the big box
i can look take a look under the truck later and see if those nuts look 'newish', i don't remember hanging on to the packing slip with enclosed parts list

I’ve got my eye on a Magnaflow exhaust, which I reckon is pretty close to the Borla set up?

 

does the Magnaflow corrode over time i never looked at specs for that so am curious lol

Hmmm. This got my wheels turning. If and when I get a catback, I might end up cerakoating the components for long term corrosion management.

looks like the nuts were re-used, after just one mild winter and new ones should look 'newer' than these do
i may have sprayed FF on them before winter but if these get roasty that will just burn it right off
so i will say not included with the kit

 

Borla box just arrived...will be installed Wednesday along with all new OEM nuts/bolts/gaskets

 

My guy called me and said it's almost done, but I need to get the exhaust bracket near the back of converter. It was missing.

OEM is $80, so I ordered the Walker 36237 bracket from Rock with FedEx overnight for $22 total

Good luck on that, I tried one of those and ended up going with an OEM, it is a pretty flimsy set up, but I had some wild drama trying to splice in a Walker loose flange Cat, before just getting the front flange welded and having the shop replace it with the OEM hanger. I was just done fighting it.

 

Don't the 3.4 TRDs come with a Borla exhaust system?
