Since you both posted this at the same time- haha. I'm thinking about getting this one real quick versus the more common UV-5R model because of a bigger battery and more wattage. Will be better for when I mountain bike too as an emergency. Thoughts? Can be here Thursday which always amazes me.

I wouldn't necessarily plan on using that in case of an emergency unless you're very familiar with how to properly use it. For emergency situations, and for texting my wife when I'm out of service. I have one of these.

Right, I have an earlier model from Garmin that's like that, but it's becoming more and more unreliable due to a poor and dying battery that's not made anymore. As for HAM radio/GMRS I'm fairly familiar with the basics as of now. I'm waiting to take both the Amateur and General test once they start them back up from all this COVID stuff.

 

It's a fine radio then. I just know of some people that carry a radio like that as an "emergency backup" and haven't a single clue how to use it to hit repeaters, etc. Not saying I do either, but that's why I have the Garmin.

Is the Baofeng a ham radio therefore requiring an operators license?

 

My basic understanding is that there is a couple frequencies (I believe in the 151MHz range) that does not require a license for two way contact between radios. You may never get caught using a HAM radio without a license depending on how frequent you use it, but the licensing part for Amateur is actually, very easy to obtain and understand where it's worth it to spend the time to get a license.

No expert, but I did (stay at a Holiday Inn Express) pick up a GMRS license earlier this year and have a baofeng. I am allowed to use authorized 462 and 467 frequencies per the FCC...but had (pre CV) also planned on getting a ham license year. 10 years and $70 for the GMRS license fit the lock-down solution for trail rides!

 

It can do multiple channels. Ham and gmrs require licenses, gmrs does not require a test. Randy and I are currently switching to gmrs actually

What is the range difference compared to CB? i feel like everytime we use CB as a group half the people cant hear.
