Specifically curious if gen 2 or 3 side mirrors are compatible with a gen 1 (2004) Tacoma. But also curious if there’s a list somewhere of backwards compatible parts (Gen 2 or 3 to 1).

The only thing 3rd and 2nd gens have in common with 1st gens is the name.

The bolt pattern on the wheels is the same, but the backspacing is different.

They are entirely different trucks. Aside from random bolts, a 1st gen probably has more parts in common with a Ford Ranger than a 2nd gen...

Good to know. Picked up my first Tacoma a week and a half ago, so I don’t know a thing. Appreciate it!

The 1st Gen Tacoma has more in common with the Toyota Pickup, 2nd and 3rd Gen 4Runner, and some 90’s sedans like the Corolla and Camry than it does with 2nd and 3rd Gen Tacomas.

All those cars share similar trim and electrical features like the door armrests, some switches, miscellaneous trim, etc.

For example, the power door armrest from a 2nd Gen 4Runner will fit a 1995-2000 power door Tacoma. The steering wheel and shifter console from a 3rd Gen 4Runner will fit a 1995-2004 Tacoma. (The drivetrains on a 3rd Gen 4Runner are nearly identical) 4Runner mirrors will 100% bolt on, except the Limited models have heating elements you have to wire on. You can even use Hilux Surf or Land Cruiser Prado power folding mirrors.

The interior metal door handles on 90’s Camrys are very very similar to 2001-2004 Tacoma door handles.

Point being, newer Tacomas have nothing in common with the 1st Gen. 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen Tacomas share a lot in common.

so helpful, thanks @BartMaster1234! Two questions:

1-what year 4Runner side mirrors would be compatible on my 04 PreTunner?

2-is there a list somewhere of all this compatibility info? Maybe in an online archive or Hanes manual?

No worries, we're all here to learn. We also like to bust each other's balls sometimes (okay, pretty much all the time) too, so prepare yourself for that. :D

There are some things, like the front coilovers that do technically bolt up, but they're designed for a truck that is larger and heavier than our trucks...

    Any 3rd Gen 4Runner mirror, 1996-2002.

But keep in mind the electrical connectors may be different, and the early Limited models had heating elements. You will have to splice the wiring.

No list as far as I know. Only way to get cross-compatible part numbers is to have access to Toyota’s inventory system, TIS.

I don't think there's any sort of list. It's so highly variable that you just kinda have to go part by part. First thing is to look for parts for that specific vehicle, or at least close to it. Keep your searches (at first) to the major revisions within the 1st gens. THat would be 1995.5-97, 98-2000, and 2001-2004, MOST parts within those sub-sets are interchangeable.

There are parts that are common between all years, and some that don't even fit for those sub-sets. Like a 2004 throttle body won't fit on a 2001, but things like fenders and door handles fit all model years.

Then, if you can't find a tocoma part, then start looking at the 3rd gen 4Runners.

But like I said, it's a total crap shoot, and it's so absurdly complicated, I'm not aware of any sort of list...
