I think we need to tally up whoever is interested and make a list just to get an idea of who wants to go/ is going. Not sure how big of a group we want to travel with at once since things generally slow down with larger groups.

but might as well make a list since by next year we will probably get a few people drop out of the run or we make 2 groups that leave a day or so apart

It’s mostly uneventful but beautiful when you drive across Canada. Travel in a group is mostly a pacing issue, since everyone has different interests and sense of time. Once you get to the Yukon, and leave Whitehorse, the highways can be rough and large sections are always being repaired. From Dawson City, north, on the Dempster, it’s wilderness, with the only gas at Eagle Plains Lodge, roughly midway. The gravel roads are hard on vehicles. Make sure all your hand wrenched parts have loctite, haha. The area around Dawson is an historic gold mining area and it’s full of old mining roads and cat trails. Fun, for a few days of exploring. An extra spare tire is a must. You’ll definitely need two spares to drive the Dempster. E load tires are best. The last time when I was there a couple of years ago, I asked the big tire shop in Whitehorse what tire was best and the guy said nitto terra grapplers. Haha, I run K02s, also good.
Don’t worry, you’ll be fine, and your rig sounds perfect.

probably way early yet to form any sort of reliable list.

This, before the actual trip there is going to be rehearsal trip to make sure everyone is prepared, understands group travel and get along.

All that is coming later in the year. Stay tuned.

well it was more for an "interested"-type list. just to see who would like to go if they could/can.

Usually for these types of events you'll have something like 30 people saying they would like to go (not guaranteeing to go, but would like to go even if they can't) but as you get closer to the date, it self filters.

i was aiming at starting that Initial "30 people that would like to go" list. As time passes in the next few months, it'll filter those who want to go and those who can go which then leads to that more reliable list.

    sweet

I use a three list approach to this:
    1) Public thread for who wants to go.
    2) DM everyone who wants to go, ask for a commitment.
    3) start a new DM thread with the committed group for logistics

10 to 15% of the people on list 1 make it to list 3. Most of those do end up going tho.

Or we can just wait and announce 2 days before we go to the public, first come first serve :D

It's still far away, "interested list" is going to be started somewhere in the late fall and we go from there. I generally know already who is coming for this trip and number of people.

I doubt anyone is interested in going my route, as it’s so expensive, but it would be fun to see some Ontario Tacos up there if the dates correspond. The ferry up the west coast is like a cruise. Then you drive from Skagway to Whitehorse across a pretty amazing pass in the middle of nowhere. We may use the water link both ways, not to sure yet. It’s so cool seeing the whales and the west coast of Canada and being on the water. It’ll be a real break from the highway. If anyone thinks they’d like to check this out, google Alaska Marine Highway. Basically it’s about 1500/vehicle + a cabin during the trip which is about 3 days.

I turned 50 in 2018 and bought myself a Tacoma for my birthday. I asked Toyota to mount a warn front bumper with VR10 winch and bought a lightbar, a block heater, an oil pan heater, a heated battery blanket and blizzaks on steelies. Once all negotiated my last stipulation to the sales guy in Mississauga was, "Can I pick it up at any dealership?" When he said, "sure" I signed the paper and said, "Whitehorse in February." My first drive was to Tuktoyaktuk on the new Inuvik to Tuk Hwy. It was -50 degrees. I taught my 14 year old son to drive manual on the Dempster and he cruised along the MacKenzie and Yukon rivers on the ice road. He just turned 16 and got his G1 a couple of weeks ago. I'd love to go again and see it in a different season.

We stayed in hotels along the way. In Eagle plains we were stuck at a hotel that was like being in "The Shining". All type of arctic wild thing was stuffed and on dislplay in the lobby and bar. There were wolves howling outside and the highway was closed because a young snowplow driver slipped off the road and plummeted to his death. In Dawson City we stayed at the Downtown Hotel which is home to the Sourdough Saloon. My son and I both took our shot at the Sourtoe Cocktail, "You can drink it fast or you can drink it slow but your lips must touch that gnarly toe!" I took a picture on the last leg up to Tuk looking due South at noon. It was just as we were passing the tree line. You can see the sun is barely over the horizon.27750245_10213804484319528_4358110799404664199_n.jpg 75285796_10218792480256309_1638424302804008960_n.jpg 27657002_10213804478839391_3603754221630435016_n.jpg 27867681_10213851733540729_8295023127269591338_n.jpg 52987155_10216738262422147_1720025589051555840_o.jpg

Hey all, I hope you get to come in to the NWT next summer for your adventure. I lived in Tuk from 2015 to 2018. I left not too long after the Inuvik-Tuk highway opened. I’ve spent time in Tuk, Inuvik and most recently Fort McPherson. So if you have any questions about the region in general, ask away.

I have a question related to the Dempster and thought I would ask here as there are some of you who have driven it as well as (presumably) some Canadians who know about winter tires in extreme cold.

So, last year I bought a 2019 TRD sport upgrade when I moved to Yellowknife. After reading through the winter tire thread I decided on Hakkapeliitta R2 studded. I honestly don’t know if they’re the best winter tire for how cold it gets here. There was lots of spinning at stop lights when trying to accelerate again. But then again, every vehicle seems to be doing the exact same thing. After about 10 minutes of driving and the rubber has warmed up, the traction improves significantly.

So I have the Nokians plus the stock tire which I believe is a firestone but I’m not sure which model. I have one set of rims (the stock rims). They are both p265/65/r17.

I’m heading even further up north in October. I will be driving down and around from Yellowknife (through Alberta, northern Bc, and the Yukon) and heading on the Dempster to Inuvik. October will have some sub-zero Celsius temps (40f) but nothing crazy and probably some blowing snow in places along the highway. But nothing extreme. I have to get there before the two ferry crossing close for freeze-up (typically end of October). I will reach Inuvik, leave my truck there, fly to a (more) remote community and in December return for my truck when the ice road opens. I will do most of my driving when I have ice road access with occasional fly-outs for summer road trips back down the Dempster (assuming the Northwest Territories relaxes their border with the Yukon *sigh*).

ok getting to the actual questions:

    - a local guy up there said some people will tell you 10ply but he personally always uses 12ply and he’s never gotten a flat. I’m assuming he means the letter system C D and so on. So what ply equivalent are my two sets of tires? And does he actually have a point or is 10ply fine? I will just be trying to get from A to B safely and taking my time.
    - I am limited for space and weight as far as my freight allowance from work for relocation but I think it would still be useful To have two sets of tires. So should I buy some rims and bring both? If so, which should I keep on for the initial October drive up given the mix of temperatures and road surfaces?
    OR
    - could I sell one set and use just the winter tires as my summer driving will be very little if any pavement?
    OR
    - should I ditch them both and buy something else. If so, what do you recommend?

any other advice/tips? This will be my first time driving the Dempster and I will be going it solo. I have driven on ice roads and I have driven the Inuvik/Tuk highway a couple of times.

    Thanks in advance!

I responded to this in the other thread you posted in. My main tip: October is when the road will close for freeze up. So id really be checking and planning because it’s going to be closed for a month once they have to get the ferry’s out. You don’t want to be stuck having to turn around and fly up.
