HELP: Universal Wiring Harness + Ditch Lights

Hello all, new to the forum and to lighting.

Problem: I have wired everything up and I keep blowing the fuse from the relay.

Here's what I did:

• Mounted and connected the (18W) ditch lights to the positive and negative cables
• Connected the positive and negative from relay onto the battery terminals
• The switch wiring is going through the firewall
• Positive switch wire is connected to the 7.5 amp ACC fuse
• Negative switch wire is grounded to a nearby metal bolt

And the second I click to turn the lights on, the fuse blows.

Help? Ideas? Pretty please?

 

What are you connecting to the 7.5 amp fuse? The leads leads from the relay should just goto a switch


Should be a wire to positive and ground
Wires to the lights (+ & -)
Wires from the relay to switch

 

Thanks for replying, I connected the positive lead from the switch to the 7.5 amp fuse.

 

Too much power, try connecting to a higher amp fuse.

 

Why are you connecting the switch to power? There should only be a connection from the relay to the switch.

 

I tried a 30 amp fuse, but still blew the wretched fuse.

 

So your physical switch you are turning on and off is connecting to a ground on one side and positive on the other?

 

Yes. Grounded on a bolt and positive lead is going to the accessories fuse.

 

No the 10 amp fuse should be more than adequate for ditch lights. Something is shorting out, double check all your connections. I have a feeling something is wired incorrectly at the switch.

Also please buy a fuse tap for that switch power wire. That cannot be safe.

 

what kind of switch are you using? from what I remember doing mine, power wire from battery with in-line fuse feeds the relay the switch goes straight to relay which trips the power on to the lights.....its kinda a stand alone system, shouldn't need to tap into the factory fuse block any where....

 

Some switches have a separate circuit for the indicator lights to tap into the dimming circuit. My Toyota style switches are like this.

there shouldn’t be any other connections for a basic setup. The only other thing would be if you are trying to do switch dimming, in which case wiring depends on the switch

 

It's this wiring harness with the switch.

 

If I am understanding the relay wiring diagram... wires for terminal 3 & 1 go to a power source with wire 3 being a direct feed with a fuse and wire diameter large enough for the load, wire 1 is feed from a switched power source, 2 goes to ground and 4 goes to the lights.

Do you have both 3 and 4 connected?

Edit:should just one of the two be connected?

 

3 is going to the 7.5 amp fuse and 4 to ground

 

Which fuse is blowing? #6?
