Yeah I mean the lockers are 900-1000 a piece so that is already a lot. Then the gear package itself is usually over a thousand. Another 550-700 or so for the compressor and it’s miscellaneous add ons.

then all of the labor that I’ll happily pay to not risk destroying my truck on my own lol

I hear you. Two things that I don't mess with on my truck are the automatic transmission and gears.

I guess if you want to mess with quite a bit bigger/heavier tires you haven't much choice.

I'm running 285/70/17 STT PROs and it feels like I could def use a regear and I have no other mods other than the lift right now... fuel economy probably largest need.

You don’t need a front locker and can find dual compressors for under $400 on group buys so you can drop that down pretty easily.

Regearing isn’t required but you’ll see more people satisfied from regearing than without. I myself ran 5.29 on stock tires for a while and loved it.

I have about 800 miles so far on my 2020 TRD OR, and it'll be in the shop next week for Nitro 5.29's and falcon tow/haul shocks. I just threw on 285/70/17's the other day, and I can definitely feel the difference from stock. I'm eager to see the difference re-gearing will do since the truck hunts even more with the hills I drive everyday in the city.

I do haul a fair amount of kayak fishing gear when I go out, and I plan to get a small TT next year to tow around with the little's.

Lol you just explained gear hunting on 2020. It only happens on long inclines .so theres no difference between all taco years .

IMO Toyota used too tall gearing for the AT. I have a MT and find that 5th gear is used more often on the highway than 6th since the 3.5 V6 runs smooth at higher RPM's.

If you look at the stock gear ratios for MT vs AT, the AT has two relatively tall overdrive gears compared to the MT.

Most who add larger tires or add heavy armor go with new gears, either 4.88 or 5.29 depending on your driving needs. If you plan on towing or live in an area with lots of hills 5.29 might be better.

As others have said, installing a new ECU tune with Orange Virus tuning can help remedy the "gear hunting" issue.

let me know what you think, I just threw on the same size tires and am thinking about regearing before doing anything else if only for fuel economy.

So it doesn’t gear hunt, it just shifts back and forth? Got it

It’s not hunting because it knows exactly what gear it wants to be in... think of it like “gear traveling”

I lifted my truck and installed 33" mud terrain tires, and i definitely felt the loss in power.. I don't have heavy armor or lots of weight either.. Now looking into re-gearing but debating between 4:88 or 5:29..

There is a debate about locking IFS, front vs rear etc. I've never seen a discernible difference as there are too many variables such as traction, tires, skinny pedal, line etc to make an objective conclusion. That said our Tacomas aren't going anywhere that needs both front and rear locked as any trail that requires both will result in significant body damage.

My biggest complaint is that I can't hold 6th in cruise control. I can run 75mph in 6th gear if I'm pressing the gas, but as soon as i hit that button at 70mph, she downshifts.

Thanks all for the great info. In CO where there be hills, 5.29s are in order me thinks.

Interesting, never tried cruise control set at 75 mph, only 70, and it worked fine on my tacoma for holding 6th. When i had my 01 tundra cruise control worked well at any speed . Have to set at 75 the next time i get the chance, and see what the truck does.
