URD Spec-U Exhaust installed on 2017 TRD Pro - Need Help

Hey Guys, first time posting on here as I just signed up so that I could ask this question. I installed the new URD Spec-U exhaust system and some weird things happened on the way home from my buddys house after. I’m hoping someone could help me with this. So we got everything installed and cranked her up and found a very small leak on the drivers side downtube. We did not use new gaskets where the header downtubes meet the Y-Pipe assembly, we used the old ones. Long story with URD, very disappointed to say the least. Anyway, seemed to be not too bad of a leak and we had completely run out of daylight, so I drove it home (15 minute drive max). About 10 minutes into the drive, both my Traction Control light and Check Engine light kick on, with a simultaneous stutter or stall with loss of power. When it happened I had cruise control on which was the weird part and also how I really noticed it. Then, the engine stutter/stall cleared up but the lights remained on. After that it seemed to drive fine, actually seemed much peppy’er. Got home, parked it, and here we are. So does anyone have the foggiest idea what could have gone wrong? We were very careful around the O2 sensors and tried to make sure everything was goodentight. Aside from the slight little exhaust leak on the driver side header flange Causing a trouble code Im at a loss. Please help!

 

Step 1: Run scan and get the DTC's.

 

thinking hard about the spec u system. mind throwing up a clip of the truck; idle/cruise/driveby would be prime. supposedly gives our motor a more bubbly tone. think vq35/37 exhaust sound. if this system seems to be problematic i might just suck it up and go with their regular urd catback and ypipe combo.

 

If your truck is a 2WD, you will have a bad time with the URD Ypipe.

I currently run the URD Ypipe on my truck, and am waiting to replace it with AFE's ypipe.

 

Trouble code wound up being “P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency below threshold”

 

Sounds like it was because of the exhaust leak perhaps. Since i assume you have the new URD exhaust with the built in resonator in the y-pipe, how are you liking it? Any drone? I have the 1st gen and needed to add a resonator before the muffler. It's still too loud at some points of the rev range but is much better.

 

Once I get the exhaust squared away with no leaks or trouble codes I will make a video clip for sharing. No Drone that I can hear, and yes it is the new version with resonator y pipe assembly. To be honest i havent driven it enough to tell how i like it, but so far so good. Will have a more accurate opinion to share once I get all problems resolved.

 

I had the Spec-U on my 2018. Yes, it makes the Toyota V6 sound like a VQ, which was awesome, but the drone is killer on the interstate. I added a top of the line Vibrant resonator before the muffler which really didn’t do anything for the drone, but it did make the good noise quieter...

I ended up going back to the stock exhaust. I’ve had aftermarket exhausts on all my cars but this Spec-U is the only one I’ve regretted.

Had some build quality issues, too. The manufacturer, URD, basically told me I’m the only one reporting problems (this is not accurate, check the forums) and refused to do anything about it.

 

I was a bit frothy to install a cat back, but after doing the preaxle dump, I can't even bring myself to install some parts that I got in a parts swap. It adds just enough noise and sounds really good with the OV Tunes. It seems that every tune has a different exhaust note.

The only very minor negative is a bit of resonance at 1,500rpm only. Even though I am in 5th or 6th at 35mph, I have only heard this drone coasting down a hill near our house. It is barely audible.

Sounds intriguing. You just cut the stock exhaust before the axle, no other changes? I liked that the Spec-U had the exhaust reroute built-in, I’m going to need to get that done somewhere.

 

Yessir. Just a bit of welding for the new outlet. Be sure to get it done as a mandrel bend. That far back and that little area reduction is certainly not noticeable. There are some good bends in the dingus end that is cut off, if you can expand the heavy gauge properly. Hydraulically, as the HF expanding tool is just not up to that task.

I go back and forth on the crossover. It is not the best design, but where I have been hung up, the crossover has not been an issue and does not have any damage, yet.

 

So, ran my OBD app on the way home and found that one of my O2 sensors is showing 0 volts constantly. I am thinking I messed it up somehow or loosened a connection. Any ideas?

 

Make sure it's plugged up properly. Then check the connector itself and the entire run of wire.

 

Check your plug connectors on the sensors, sounds like one is not seated. Has to be one of the second two O2 sensors.

 

Had the same issue with the O2 sensor before, check engine light and 0 volts to the O2 sensor on both banks.
Wiring were all seated tightly, and no exhaust leaks.
I just went and replaced the antiseize with a high temp copper based antiseize.
No errors for half a year so far.

 

UPDATE: So I let it cool down after getting home and got under’er and checked both banks of O2 sensors. Inspected both harnesses and made sure the connections were tight and nothing was damaged in the install, all seemed to be fine. Then I disconnected the positive terminal and let it sit to reset, reconnected & cranked it back up and lights are gone but sure it’s going to come back on after it comes up to temp and I drive so many miles. My buddy who installed it with me was doing his own research to my issues and stumbled across a thread that talked about my exact issue.

So, I also discovered that my cruise control no longer works in addition to having the check engine light on. This explains why in my original post I said it felt like I “lost power” but I think it was my ecu disabling the cruise, supposedly its a safety precaution for this trouble code. According to my buddy and this other thread, an exhaust leak will cause the exact symptoms that I am experiencing. So hopefully once my new gaskets get here, I’ll have this thing licked. Fingers crossed.

 

Ooo, I didn’t think of that. May have to try that.

 

The CC thing is because folks were not getting CEL issues fixed. So now, if a car throws a code, a lot of ancillary features like cruise will not work.

 

I contacted @Gadget@URD about fitment issues with mine as well. It turns out the website says how perfectly well made the exhaust is for a Tacoma but not which Tacoma!!! The spec U exhaust was a huge waste of money and a disappointment for me as well especially since I purchased every extra offered and still throwing a CEL..... like cmon the description on the URD website is totally misleading.

edit: at the very end of the note on the website it says not for double cab long bed but the angles of the exhaust still made it very hard to align the joints. Getting everything perfected by a shop tomorrow for $250 which isn’t that bad. Hopefully all my lights go away after that or I need sensors from heating them up too much during removal. I’m going to try and work with gadget so he can make a long bed version.
