Any woodworkers?

not sure what your application is, ...but seeing some kind of herringbone pattern, ...i'd imagine one would want to be showing the edge or face grain, and minimize the amount of end grain, ...end grain is oftentimes hidden for aesthetics, and having long lengths across the width of boards (i can see those are flatsawn cuts) is dimensionally less stable to seasonal humidity swings...

walnut is great for looks and for working; ..should be fairly easy to cut and work due to its open grain structure...

 

This wont be structural its just to cover the framed 2x4s and make it look like an exposed beam. I dont understand most of those words haha I'm just the son of a man that was a carpenter for a brief spell

 

...doesn't have to do anything w/ being "structural", ...wood being a natural material, "moves" w/ relative humidity, ..and it "moves" in disproportionate amounts; largely no dimensional change in the along-grain dimension (axis of a board), ..but can have appreciable change in the tangential (along the growth rings in end grain) dimension, ..which is usually across the width of boards, particularly flatsawn boards... if you use primarily edge/face grain, ..there's less changes you'll have gaps opening up or cracks/checks appearing, ...wood pieces of predominantly end grain and short along the axis are weak, which is why you can easily split or break apart short offcuts w/ your hands..

Since its an open grain I suppose that makes it not ideal for a end grain cutting board right?

 

Just finished these today.

 

Sealing it will help reduce the amount of expansion, but wont eliminate from my experience. Also a sharp blade shouldnt have any trouble cutting walnut

 

...allow me to preface by saying i have never made an end grain cutting board, ..but, in general, ...i would imagine that closed-grain woods (maple, cherry, etc.) would be advantageous over open grained (walnut, oak, ash, ...) because the pores exposed in the end grain are much much smaller and less likely for bacterial build-up, easier to wipe clean, etc...

Walnut end grain is used for cutting boards. I had a lot of movement on a couple test boards i made

 

Just picked this up for the garage to keep my shop cool, anyone got one? And thoughts on pumping it into the dryer vent with a Y adapter?

No, but I have an exposed dryer vent that runs through the garage so it is easily accessible.

 

Might work only thing is when dryer is running dunno if it would want to push air into AC unit
