I was very lucky to have a good transmission guy it has been longer then I think time flies he may have retired or moved on. He did all my work for several years rebuilt drive shafts and transmissions and differentials

These transmissions are really simple When you know what your doing I watched him pull mine apart in about 10 minutes put the bearing kit in a few gears with a chipped tooth .

Reach in one of several buckets pull out the correct gears in good shape (Why parts never get tossed in the scrap )

It works you have a year warranty .

The down side in not knowing just what the 5th gear problem was.

Thanks, just trying to keep list in my head of big ticket replacement items for first gens.
What was your original estimate to repair your trans?
I know it's frustrating because it sounds like this shop is clearly pulling some type of stunt on you. If they actually did install a rebuilt trans from a reputable rebuild (jasper or marlin crawler) I would think your in good shape. I'd be very curious to see where your rebuilt trans came from.
As far as the cash vs. Credit card debate, I wouldn't loose sleep over that. Getting Master Card to deny payment is not as easy as it sounds when it comes to mechanical repairs.
I ran into an issue with a transmission shop years ago. I'll spare you the details but my first thought was to get master card involved. Long story short they said I would need a letter from another repair shop disputing the work of the transmission shop in question. I went back and talked things over with the owner and worked things out. It was a small shop and the owner turned out to be a great guy. That was 25 years ago and I've used him several time since (luckily I haven't needed any complete rebuilds), but I've used him for differential work and seal replacements.

@Cucvfan my original estimate was 1200 to 1400 to pull, fix, and reinstall. He sounded extremely knowledgeable over the phone and sounded convinced it was just the synchro... in hindsight I probably went with him just because he wanted to blame a part and not my amateur work lol

Every other shop (which were limited cause most didn't want to work on a manual trans) said 800 to pull and bench time was extra for however long bench time took.

Take those prices with a grain of salt because I live in the seattleish area and everything is expense here unless you do it yourself.

I can assure he he definitely didn't go with a reputable rebuild shop, there's a layer of dirt on the grey paint so I'm thinking it was on someone's local warehouse rack for awhile

You had trans shops that didn't want to work on a manual trans? That seems odd and sad lol. Autos are way more complex than manuals

Oddly enough about 8 of the 12 local to me shops told me the only thing they would do with a manual is R+R. If had known that's all this guy would've done I'd have stayed closer to home lol

I understood sometimes you just need to vent to people that can relate

It can sometimes be rough on wives and girl friends cause then you have to listen about Bra dilemmas not enough closet space etc

Not a problem, I never actually mentioned it in this particular thread... the truck had 221k on it when I bought it. Crazy good price because cyl 1 had low compression and it was throwing a check engine light, previous owner couldn't get it to pass emissions and drove it until he burnt the clutch up and it wouldn't move any more.

My avatar picture is the day I towed it home Hahaha

The only reason I rebuilt the transmission is because it was leaking where the cases meet up to the intermediate plate and I wanted piece of mind of having a rebuilt trans coupled to a rebuilt engine, it shifted fine and there was nothing mechanically wrong with it... but I wanted to prove to myself I could rebuild a 5speed (although I had never torn into one) and I technically succeeded in rebuilding it into a 4speed

Am I missing something here? I don’t get why they wouldn’t work on manuals. To me it seems a lot easier to rebuild a manual rather an auto as long as you’ve got a good press and a little knowledge. I’m in the middle of my manual swap and learning about autos vs manual and how they are actual assembled, I would choose a manual over auto to rebuild, it seems a lot simpler. Even with dealing with the synchros. Is that really worse than clutch packs and possible valve body work?
Correct me if I’m wrong as I have not worked on or rebuilt either but based on trans research I’ve done recently seems like manual is simpler to build.

I think that you have a tranny that works, you can buy the old core back if you want! But at the end of the day maybe you could have been a little more specific and demanded how you wanted it fixed. The bottom line is you took it there because you couldn't figure our the fifth gear pop out situation.

What's funny is I've been in the exact same situation, paid an old tranny guy to fix my tranny in my ranger, got it back put it in and it popped out of fifth gear!

I now fix everything myself and still mess stuff up from time to time, but at least I know what I have in the end.

I think it just comes down to what they have experience in doing, not many people drive a manual anymore especially in certain areas. So those shops probably don't see them very much or at all.

I would still think though that a shop calling itself a "transmission" shop would have the wherewithal to work on a manual, but I guess the times they are a changing

I think this is spot on .

So many vehicles with Automatics I don`t know if you can even order a Manual on the Mid size Trucks any more .

I venture a Automatic transmission on the bench you can charge a much higher rate per hour then a small vehicle manual transmission .Then it might be the people good with the manuals did not care for automatics and move on.

My person did not do automatics then it was never billed as a Transmission shop.

You can still get a manual on the new 2020 Tacomas, but I think just Toyota and Jeep (the Gladiator) are the only trucks you still can.

Nissan used to as well but the new Frontier coming out next year won't have one anymore so I've heard
