Am I leaking oil from motor?

Here are the numbers for Tacoma valve cover parts plus one half moon as they can break when removing

No, these are the parts for the valve covers,
2 Valve covers gaskets
2 Cam seal plugs
6 Spark plug gaskets
16 Valve cover washers
1 Fipg gasket maker
1 Intake body gasket because I have a supercharger, 2 if you don't
1 Half moon plug,, because one broke when removing, you can replace all 4 or clean them instead

 

I had very similar looking valve covers before i replaced the gaskets last summer.

Decided to clean them up a little while I had them out.




Still look good to this day 1 year later.

 

What did you use to clean them? I’m planning on getting the whole engine bay steam cleaned before the job but incase I don’t I’ll be doing them myself.

 

I think I used Zep Citrus Degreaser (smells good and pretty easy on your skin) and a brass wire brush? Maybe steel wire brush. Can't remember. It was the little handheld versions. Basically heavy duty toothbrushes.

Was quite the workout, mind you. I'm sure there's a cleaning chemical out there more effective.

If I were to do it again, I'd look into the brass wire attachments for power drills. You'll find that the 5VZ's valve covers have a lot of nooks and crannies.

I think I also tried using a fine grade emory cloth to smooth it out.

Didn't come out spotless, but a hell of a lot better than when I first pulled it out!

 

X2, a drill wire brush makes quick work and a dremel with a flexible cable with wire head
attachment.
The small toothbrush type bass brush with the 45 degrees angle.

Last, a can or two of Carburetor cleaner to get all the debris out and you’re good to go

 

I would add intake plenum gaskets (upper/lower) to that list. They are relatively cheap. I have replaced them both times I've done the valve cover job. Also, if you're going to thoroughly clean the throttle body while it's off, I would replace the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve gasket.

And you need 4 half moon plugs.

 

The half Moon's I use a Dremel and clean them up is there any reason why you can't do that.

No reason why you can't clean them up and re-use them. Just saying the parts list says 1 half moon. Just wanted to make sure it's understood, to those that don't know, there are 4 half moons... not one.

If someone wants to re-use the half moons, they need to be careful pulling them out. Do not rock side to side when griping them to pull them out... there are ridges on the outside that will break off... ask me how I know

 

Ok cool, I did break one when I pulled mine out so that's why I had one on the parts list and 1 intake gasket because I have a supercharger

 

Just ordered everything in timmys videos along with spark plugs. Should be all I need right? I’ll post progress pictures when I start it within a week.

 

You may already be on top of this, but invest in some painter's tape and a sharpie. And some zip-loc bags to hold all the bolts and nuts!

I taped off and numbered all my connections as I was pulling everything apart. Gave me amazing peace of mind knowing that everything would be going back together properly.

 

And Tesa tape for the wiring harness.
Its rated at 300 degrees and how’s your opportunity to paint those covers if you want

Wish I had the funds to powdercoat my valve covers when I had them out last summer. Sadly not! Maybe next time though!

 

It was 100.00 for both powder coated, not a spray can.

 

That's approx 136 beaver dollars

This is a good time to scrub down all the old oil and grease that has collected in the intake valley area too,
Its time consuming put well worth it

A few cans of carb cleaner and simple green go a long way
