I have the exact same setup on my 2016.
Is a re-gear necessary? Not really, but it depends on what you want to do. If you're towing anything or carry weight in your bed, you might want to consider it. You'll definitely notice the difference in acceleration and gas mileage between your stock setup and the 33's". C load will, in all likelihood, be lighter (which is better) than E load.
If you have mud flaps you'll probably have rubbing, and some trimming may be necessary.
    Good luck!

    Cheers

I have a 2018 DCSB OR with the 4runner pro 17" wheels with 255/80R17 On stock suspension. There is a noticeable loss of "pep" but it didn't ruin the truck, that said I have an appointment to regear on Monday.

C vs. E, there are not many load range C tires in the 255/80R17 size, I have BFG KM2's in load range E and I don't think the ride is too bad as long as you run an appropriate tire pressure(i aim for low 30s).

I don't have mud flaps so no worry there, no other trimming would be required? Would spacers help prevent rubbing?

Unfortunately, it's not as black and white as that.
I have a 2" lift, and I encountered some rubbing. Not bad, but it was there. I took a heat gun to the fender liners (easy, 5 minutes) to help, but I had some interference with my mud flaps.
I also also have aftermarket UCA's with the caster adjusted to +3.5°... which helps with rubbing on the back of the wheel well.

    Cheers

Spacers would make rubbing worse with a skinny tire.

I have a 2020 Pro and just switched to Wildpeaks 265/75/16. No rubbing at all on or off road, but then again the tire diameter is only 1" bigger overall

Beautiful truck. I know the tires are "skinnies" but what size? I'm guessing 255/85 16?

So I've read through more of this thread now. I had Cooper ST Pro's on a 1/2 ton before and loved them. They make a 255/75/17 in a C Load. I think this may be the perfect tire for a stock OR suspension. Any thoughts? Should I stick with the 265/70/17 that we know will work? Hoping to get 4 Runner TRD Pro Wheels.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on some 255/80/17 Wildpeaks, as it sounds like I can fit them on stock suspension.

Found em for $193 a piece, is that a good deal? Or should I try and wait around for 4th of July sales?

And follow up, does a skinny 33 fit in the spare tire spot?

I'd wait for a sale, and yet a skinny 33 fits in the stock spot

Assuming “yet” was “yes”. Do tabs need to be bent and hoist relocated to fit the spare?

Depends on the tire, some run small some run big.

Got it. Looking at the 255/80/R17 Wildpeak AT3 and new Toyo ATIII, both listed at 33.1” vs the ST Maxx around 32.6”. Planning to bend and relocate to fit spare.

I was super torn between skinny’s or regular 33s. This morning I was going to purchase the skinnies and backed out and went 285s. I am very happy I did, I think a lot of stuff regarding the 285 is blown out of proportion on here and scared me a bit. I am barely rubbing anywhere off-roading with a 2.5 inch lift and aftermarket upper control arms. No rubbing on the street. I know a lot has to do with wheel combo etc but just wanted to give my opinion for people on the fence.
