Definitely caliber. Id like a shorter barrel 556 at some point. Something thats classified as a pistol

Just my opinion but if you want to go pistol sized I would look at something in .300BLK. I have a 7.5in pistol and 10.5in SBR, that round is built for the short barrels and if you ever want to go full tactical and buy a suppressor that is its real niche. I can put the 10.5 on a 6in plate at 100 yards all day which is more than good enough for the shooting I do.

5.56 is great and I have a handful of rifles in the caliber but I can't see using it in anything shorter than a 12.5in barrel and even that I think is a less than perfect compromise between size and performance. Though this could still be built as a pistol with the right stock length.

Wouldn't run 556 in anything less than 11.5 because of dwell time. Especially suppressed. The 11.5" carbine is approximately 4% longer weapon than its' 10.5" counterpart, but this extra inch gives the barrel a 40% increase in length for dwell time. IMHO, this is an excellent trade off. This additional dwell time (all other things being equal) will allow the carbine to be more forgiving to different ammo types, extremes in air temperature, weak or worn extractor springs, worn extractors, buffer weights, etc..

.300blk is different because you're talking about a subsonic .30cal round.

I honestly know nothing about guns. I didn't know the keltec wasn't classified as a pistol until I already had it. In an ideal world I'd sell it, build an actual 9mm "pistol" rifle and then just get a full size ar15 or ak47

You aren't wrong in the slightest. SCAR is decently lightweight (it is news to me the PWS is lighter?), but the piston system gives it a fairly violent recoil impulse. SR25 does have some upgrades from a typical large frame AR, but yes it costs a pretty penny. And the FAL is certainly outdated, but I think lambasting it's cool factor because it has been used by bad people (yea, some weird shit about Rhodesia?) is like hating AKs for being used by communist dictators or the MP40 for being used by Nazis. Doesn't mean they don't have a cool factor.

That said, since I'm also bored--on the caliber vs barrel I'd personally never bother with a 5.56 in anything longer than a 14.5; yes the 5.56 gets anemic out of barrels shorter than 18 inches, but frankly I'm don't see a scenario where I'd need to shoot a 5.56 past 300 yards and if the world gets that spicy I'd want to have either the mobility afforded by the lighter ammo of the 5.56, or I would step up to a full power cartridge like 308 (i.e. my SCAR 17 also happens to be my Elk rifle).

This guy gets it. Although there is a pretty consistent performance protocol all the way down to 10.3" for 5.56, hence the Mk18 and Noveske's smattering of stubbies.

Personally, I went 11.5" Sionics for my SBR in 5.56. But I wouldn't fault anyone for shaving every inch they could if they were married to the caliber.

Yeah, I get it. I still love Krinks. I just couldn't ever justify spending $4K+ on a single gun when I can build two or more that'll outperform it for the same price.

The 16" 5.56 definitely has its place, and in some cases, even the 18". You're not dominating any western regional 3Gun or 2Gun matches with anything under 16", as matches like Hard as Hell push you to the brink of range. And in a military capacity, a 16" is still maneuverable in CQB/urban environments while allowing you to reach out in open space (eastern Europea or Korean peninsula, for example...)

If people want to get technical, you should tune your ammo to the barrel twist as well so that you can max velocity and ballistics, as well as understand your dope at distance.

True. Although I'd note that if you're running a 10.3-12.5" barrel, it's largely irrelevant. You won't get keyholes or POI shifts large enough to matter inside of ~200m. And if you're throwing out to 300+ with an SBR...you've got problems.

I do really like this point, though. For any who doesn't know, you can lose significant accuracy AND precision (they are different) with poor round to barrel mating. Heavier bullets need more aggressive twist rates to stabilize them, while lighter bullets can lose their tail if you don't dial the twist down accordingly. Physics, yo.

Really most anything, it'll be my first, but if I were going to be picky I would say a slickster or something of similar design/quality. I don't know too much about them to be honest. I'm 6'1" so im right on the edge of needing a large but will probably go with a medium to reduce weight or bulk.

At that price point, you are likely limited to steel armor plates (heavier). A couple of options here that fit your budget. I've never ordered from them, so can't really say much about the company or their products.
