yeah, i'm not even planning on pulling the third member. I helped a buddy out with regearing a new axle for his truck at our school shop and just the smell of the diff alone was enough to make me want to pay someone to do it for me. well worth my money, but if people can do it themselves then more power to them.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

    Diff oil stinks... yes.

But the money saved by pulling the 3rds yourself is WAY worth it, in my opinion. You're saving 500 minimum... at least that's what you save in this area.

I must be the only person around that doesn't mind the smell of gear oil

Supercharger snout oil is a different story, that shit reeks when it's time to change.

I don't mind diff oil either. But I grew up around diesels and grease so I think I am just used to it. Personally I think it adds nicely to the delicate potpourri that permeates my garage. Part gas, part grease, fresh rubber tire smell, diff oil, fresh cut wood and perhaps a bit of a "dank" smell :anonymous:...

Yeah forgot wood smoke too. My side door is down wind from my smoker on the back porch :D

I've no joke had people comment how great my garage smells lol. First time my girlfriend walked into it she said "Now this is how a proper garage should smell"

I don’t particularly like the smell of gear oil, but it’s tolerable. What really smells is a differential when it’s burning up. Burnt gear oil is puke worthy.

Yeah, I have one coming. I’ll be happy to have it done and over with!

I ran into a wall today... apparently the pinion shims that came with my second-hand set up kit are incorrect. Could be a fluke and it’s hard to tell since I got everything second hand from a member here on TW, but I feel like it’s probably worth getting the Yukon set up kits instead of the USA standard that I got. I Had to order the pinion shims in... Now I’m just hoping to have my diffs back together and in the pickup before next Saturday when I leave for my 28 day work rotation.

also, check out the ring gear bolts that came with this kit...D8EB3337-99A8-43D4-8E74-B9F9DB7BFDEB.jpg This stripped at 11 lbs below spec torque (71 ft lbs is spec). 3 other ones started to strip, so I am reusing my old bolts. Not too worried about reusing the old ones with the keepers that keep them from backing out.

The shims that come in the kits are useless. So basically the kits are useless. I machined my own shims and checked the pattern, when it was good I ordered the correct shims from Toyota. If I had known how useless those kits were I would've saved a bunch of money and just ordered them Toyota.

Yeah the "washer" plates as they are called haha. Expensive too.

Any shims that come with any master kit are stupid and worthless. They are so flimsy compared to others. But it's just expensive to buy several yourself since you have to have it torqued to measure anyways so you never really know if you need just a tiny more or tiny less or a lot more or less until you put it all back together and measure.

You'll be fine. I've reused my OEM ring bolts twice now. Once for the regear and again for the locker install.

While I’m waiting for my shims to come in, I figured I’d get to work on a much simpler project. I’m moving my trans, tcase, and front diff to a breather up on the firewall647C0E6B-8412-4356-8E2C-73F403C71F57.jpg
Its an IFJF kit that came off of Amazon. IFJF Differential Axle Breather... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V3C77HY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

basically the same kit as the arb, but a lot cheaper. I think they actually produce the arb kit?

This is how I am going to do the tcase and transB3BA5C9A-1F06-48AA-8454-8B19B22CF3DD.jpg I got this idea from a google search that led me to a 4Runner forum. The guy in that post got rid of the breather in the space between the trans and tcase by blocking it with a plug. I figured that every cavity should be vented to equalize the pressure. I used a 1/4” npt tap total the existing breather holes. This could also be done with the assembly in the vehicle, but I thought I’d do it while it’s out. Debating whether or not to run my rear diff vent all the way to the fire wall or bring it up somewhere in the rear. My thought was to put another “t” in and just run one line forward from the trans that includes breathers for the trans, tcase, and rear diff. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I've done a mod or two
Took a walk around the junkyard since my t-100 axle was an inventory error apparently. looked at some Ford Axles and even took a glance around the yard for other yotas. Not much, but I found these chingaderas and put em on the Taco.

    0611201700.jpg

    0611201700a_HDR.jpg

Search is back on for a rear axle, and no, I will not run spacers.

They wanted $600 for a pulled tundra axle. If it was in the junkyard side it would have been $166. At $600 I can't justify it, it's still a shitty Toyota semi float axle like the taco stock one.
