Brake controller mounting?

I’m having a P3 brake controller installed in my 2018 Taco SR5 on Monday and wanted to know where the best location is to have them mount it? Any suggestions with pictures would be greatly appreciated.

 

Many have used this to put in the cubby next to the driver door.
I didn't pick one up before hand, so the only place it could be reasonably mounted was on the panel to the left of the steering column adjacent to the airbag cover. Its a bit of a pain getting in and out unless you undock the controller when not in use.

I put my P3 in the pocket to the left of the wheel. Not to much trouble and its not in he way.

 

I have a question that I have not been able to find the answer to.

I'm 99% sure with the P3 you can apply the trailer brakes independent from the truck brakes. Thought I'd ask if this is true from someone who has it and uses it.

 

yes. all the different versions of the tekonsha brake controllers I've used have had a slide that independently operates the trailer brakes.

I went to install my brake controller this evening and found this wire exposed. Does it need to go back into the empty fuse spot? Anyone know what it’s for?

 

None of that looks factory.

 

Someone in another thread suggested it might be the aftermarket alarm dealers have on there to try to sell you.

I'd assume it is a low priority given your current success with products though.

What are some of the best controller models? I need to get one asap and am not so much concerned with saving a buck, but with getting one that is highly rated.

 

Get a proportional (intertia-based) controller. The time delay style is not worth your time. Tekonsha makes great units, the p3 is very popular.

There is also a wave of newer models out that allow for a stealthier install, most of the 'brains' of the units are hidden out of sight. Redarc two pro elite is one.

bottom of steering wheel shaft, out of the way, but you can still see it and use it. Been there over 10 years. Same two zip ties too.....

 

Here's mine. Just took a dremel to that useless insert. I don't bang my knees on it, and it's really easy to reach and see.
