How much lift? For bigger tires?

 

Every parent needs a small child distraction device, especially when working on vehicles on jack stands.

2” front and rear. The rear shocks and springs suck when loaded up, either pulling our camper or full of product for work deliveries, so I got an AAL and 5100’s. Since the backs going up I figured I should do the front too. I’ve already got 255/85r16’s.

Looking good! I like the setup, may do something like that when it’s time to replace my tires. Did you have any clearance issues with the larger tires before the lift? How much effect on gas milage? Some big cleats on those tires, should be good for rough dirt roads and snow. Side steps like mine, Tygers?

 

They’re 255/85r16 Maxxis Bighorn MT-762’s, by the specs they’re 33.2” tall. They rubbed on the front mudflaps on big bumps and and there’s a polish mark on the UCA’s, nothing I’m worried about. I lost about 1mpg on the highway and 2mpg in town. I’m still getting 20mpg Highway, 17-18 in town, and 14 mph towing our pop up trailer.

Lift is 5100’s front (on the top perch) and rear, and a

tuff country 85250 2” single AAL. Rides great! It’s much more controllable on big road bumps and the washboards on the dirt roads by the house. It feels properly
damped finally and imo the stock rear springs are way too soft.

 

Excellent info, I appreciate it! I don’t typically carry a lot of weight in the back but thinking of getting either a Gator Tailback hard cover or a softopper for camping gear, both of those are pretty light. I’d love an aluminum camper shell but sometime haul brush out so need something I can take off easily. I’d love to have a setup like yours if I ever go on long cross country trips sometimes on unimproved roads, I made a 8000 mile trip all around the US and Canada like that with a fiberglass camper shell years ago in an Ford F-150 and want to do maybe a shorter trip like that again in my Tacoma.

 

I’ve only put 20 miles on this setup so far but I’m so happy with it. The damping is so much better overall than the stock SR shocks its not even funny.

I decided on this setup based on a ton of reading on here and info on various vender sites. I felt the front spring rates (and therefore springs) were fine, especially since several of the lift springs for this truck are nearly the same spring rate as stock just longer overall. The front 5100’s are longer than stock to compensate for 2” of lift:


So that choice was done: 5100’s only up front. I wanted to match shocks front and rear, so I got the full set.

I went with a single AAL because I do carry heavy loads pretty frequently both for work and for home, and we camp and pull a trailer. Just from how the truck rode stock I knew the stock rear springs were way too soft and the shocks are severely under-damped too, not helped by the fact that I think the drivers side was leaking oil.

A lot of people on here complain that the single AAL rides harsh compared to the 3 leaf setups. I wanted to know why... So I found a calculator online for figuring out leaf spring spring rates and did the math. Stock mathed out to about 400#; 3 leafs, overload in, at 650; the single AAL at 950. I’m not afraid of heavy spring rates, and with the heavy tires and heavy loads I decided I was ok with the single AAL.

So far I think I was 100% correct. The back end is so much more controllable over washboard roads and big frost heaves. The front end feels great. I took my truck down a rutted up forest road and it’s so much better there too.

 

Just got mine about 2 weeks ago. Looking for some inspiration not sure which route to go.

Joined @skierd in the lifted SR club this weekend. Had some help to put the Tough Dog kit on.



Had been researching suspension options for ages and finally settled on these because they seemed to check all of my boxes. This is the first kit they have made for a Tacoma, but the Land Cruiser guys love these shocks. Ride is great and there's no strange vibes or other issues yet. Very happy.




Shocks are 40mm twin tubes with rebound adjustability. They are foam cell shocks to combat fade and increase shock's cooling ability as more oil can be imbued within and allow more air to cool it on the larger shock body.

Shocks were paired with a Headstrong AAL and that has worked marvels so far.

haha Yes it is a Newfi. She passed away 5 yrs ago, still miss her every day. And you’re right, she was 160 lbs of hair and slobber...great dogs, they’re lazy and lovable.
