I’ve checked every shield under that truck. Spent about 5 hours under the truck tapping everything and making sure all the heat shields are tight. The only thing I didn’t check was the cat shield. It seemed tight but I couldn’t take it off to see if there were rocks in it because of the way it’s in there I would need to lift the truck up.

I don’t think it’s lifter or anything in the bottom end of the motor because my oil pressure is good, my oil is full and looks clean, and I’m getting decent gas mileage. by now at almost 5k miles I’m sure if it was a bad bearing, bent rod, lifter spring, my motor would have gone bye bye.

it definitely sounds like something rattling around there, not an engine noise

    I have a 2017.
    It ticks.
I turn the radio up and drive faster. 76,000 miles and I get 21-23 mpg. It’s annoying but no big deal. FYI it never goes away. The rattle in the cab somewhere in the upper right side of the dash is more annoying. I found dropping the windows, radio full blast and speeding help.

Good to know. Does yours make the same type of tick as mine in the video I posted?

I’d need to listen to mine after running it. 3 years and I don’t hear it anymore. (It’s like living near a airport, you get use to hearing jets) My neighbor once said it “ticks” loud. Toyota said “it’s normal!” Lol. Seriously didn’t have a issue with it .
Also here’s this little bit of info out since 2016, when Tacomas first rolled out with the new 3rd gen.

Tacoma's 3.5L engine is equipped with both direct and port fuel injection system. The ticking sound is a result of the self-cleaning direct fuel injection systems activation and is a normal characteristic of normal system operation. No repair is necessary to remedy this condition.

I understand the Tacoma tick, that’s normal. I would say the ticking I’m hearing when I accelerate isn’t normal.

.All I heard was wind and road noise. Maybe if you got a mechanic in your neighborhood stop over with some beer and ask him to do a test drive.
