Too sipe or not too sipe?

That is the question. For those of us running large or over-sized Mud Tires in areas that receive lots of rain or snow, do you sipe your tires? I have read several articles discussing the issues pros and cons. Do you sipe your tires? If not, why? If so, why?

 

I wouldn't.... as its probably not going to help as much as a good set of A/T tires would.

Get yourself a set of A/T tires and run those on the streets. Save the Mud Terrains (as a spare set of wheels & tires) for the trails.

 

but it's sure as hell a whole let better than not doing anything at all. i'm getting just the center band siped. otherwise i'll be the badass lifted cool looking truck that can't drive on snow lol

I've been trying to figure out this question for a few weeks now. A lack of traction in the wet is what is driving it (no pun intended).

Siping will create more biting edges which will improve traction under acceleration and braking and is supposed to help with heat dissipation which is supposed to help the tread last longer. But there is some chance that chunking could occur.

With snow and ice time coming I'll need to make a decision soon. I do have another set of rims, my old stock alloys, so I could purchase a dedicated set for winter. Not sure its worth it to go that route. Don't really want to run those fugly rims, not to mention the expense of another set of tires.

Discount tire will sipe my tires for $12 each.

How have you resolved this?

 

i'm in the same boat. i want to sipe mine but i'm afraid that they will chunk out after winter when i drive on gravel roads and trails.

i've got a set of 4 black steel rims if you want them for a second set of tires, i'll give them to yu (all 4) for 50 bucks if you want them

Ive read a lot of mixed reviews about it. Some folks swear by it. It invalidates your tire warranty tho.

 

Sipe... always sipe.

My tires are from Discount Tire and the siping is done by Discount Tire. They honor the full replacement warranty, the tires run cooler and get better traction. No downside.

Perhaps a bit, but so does wheeling. With just the center lugs siped, I don't see much of it.

 

ya i like the idea of that, i'm thinking i might just have them sipe the center ones if they can. if the sipe lasts longer though are you going to get some wierd wear on the tires with only the center siped?

 

I have not seen any odd wear patterns that I can attribute to siping. As a rule, they will only sipe the center blocks half way. When you wear down to that point, Discount Tire will resipe the tires for free. At least mine has always done it that way.

I have been having tires siped for a lot of years now and honestly don't see a downside. That's why I keep doing it

 

I may have to try it since I am running 35" m/t's and wint
er is coming.

 

That's the same combo I have. On ice you will notice a big difference in traction. On snow, less so, but still noticeable.

i'm getting my alignment done on monday so i might ask them about siping the center tread since i'm pretty sure this winter is going to be a bad one here.

alright i probably will. i dont see anything wrong with doing it except the possibility of maybe chunking out but what ever we'll see. i'm interested in if there will be any difference in feeling on the snow
