I’ve rented a lot of cars in my day. Each one was driven hard. Nothing like a little light off roading and rallying in a shitbox economy car.

What' I learned on Tacoma World

I beat on rentals the same way I beat on my first apartment in college.

They don't change the oil man.

I drained my oil and now it's over-filled and now the transmission slips.

Help I installed aftermarket part X and now I have

    1. A death wobble or vibration
    2. Blown fuses
3 My head light are fucked
    4. A funny noise
    6 Poor MPG

I drilled a hole in insert soft under belly part here.

I pulled a 30 foot 6500# camper up a 6 percent grade in the Rockies for miles and the Tacoma handled it just fine.

I changed my oil at 10k because oil company X said my analysis was good whoop t do you saved $40 and paid $XX for the analysis

I drove into a parking bollard and had some guy on CL or Fraudbook marketplace fix her up for $300.

How many butt connectors do I need to install Raptor lights and can I use Romex

I buy Chinese parts because they're OEM quality.

I wheel hard every weekend even if it means driving over a planter box at Wal Mart.

I chopped my exhaust off before the axle.

Rental vs. buying off your typical TW user.

Hands down i'm buying the rental.

I buy new nowadays. Zero or .9% interest is impossible to beat.

Still, I wouldn't worry too much about the premium optioned & badged vehicles from Hertz, such as a TRD OR 4x4 or a Jeep Rubicon or Range Rover. Those were in the "managers' specials" category that were a reward for frequent renter platinum card members. I've never seen one that didn't look clean and maintained to spec. I guess that era's over now, and perhaps some bargains are to be had.

I guess that answers the question of “who buys a 2WD Off Road?”. Apparently Hertz did.

A lot of people do. I can think of a couple who bought and joined here and later found out the TRD OR they bought isn't 4x4 because it says off-road - and they thought it was.

Not to mention the majority who buy 4x4 vehicles in the US don’t use it or need it.

I've never driven a rental car that had anything wrong with it. People drive them hard but today's cars have limiters and computers driving them. Not much you can really hurt without getting in trouble.

That said, I wouldn't buy one.

We bought an 02 Grand am in 03, didn't find out till a few years later that it used to be rental. Would I have bought it at the time knowing that, hell no. But that was hands down the best vehicle I had ever owned. Sold it last Oct when I bought my tacoma. Had over 180k miles on it with very little repairs over the years. I guess we were lucky because like everyone else, i beat the crap out of the cars I rent!

I always check the vehicle history report on used cars. Lots of deals stock their inventory with rentals.

If she gets a full inspection and nothing is wrong with her, take her for a spin and then keep her if you like her.

Whats the difference between a Hummer and a Rental Car?

A Rental Car can go ANYWHERE!

Yes, women you marry can wreck your life and take your stuff, a prostitute only wrecks your life if your girlfriend is Elizabeth Hurley and she finds out about it.

I worked for a Dealership based car rental company (not a Hertz or Avis) that had Fords. For fun we used to get to about 20-30 MPH and throw the shifter into park to hear the cool noise it made. We also used to leave the shifters in Low and cruise at 30 mph at 6000 RPMs just for a laugh. To be fair, I also learned how to do burnouts with a manual on new VWs. Practice made perfect, you should see me do doughnuts , I can get within a foot of a light pole as I spin around it. I would never do any of these things again, or buy a rental unless it was half price. Then again, some get lucky.

You never know with rentals. I’ve bought 2. One 20 years ago. ‘99 cavalier. After a couple of years after owning I detailed the interior. Back seat had something soaked into it. Then found a couple of bullet casings. The soaked stuff was probably coffee or chocolate (I hope), but then the bullets were odd. That car died after 10 years of ownership (electrical went to crap). Second car was 16 years ago, an ‘03 grand am. Still with the family after 230k miles.

I got lucky x2, but that’s what I could afford then. Today with Tacoma’s high premium prices, I’d buy certified used. But that’s just me.

    Good luck OP.
