Multiple warning lights turned on

Yep, 12 tacos, 3 lifted, always something, even if its minor and something you can wrench on its still something. Looks great for the first year or so though before the squeaks, rattles and headaches appear.

 

Without fail, that’s how it goes. As I mentioned earlier, go look at very high mileage Tacos and Tundras. The ones that are at 500k and even 1 million miles. They are ALL sitting at that factory suspension setup. Not the trucks on 33s and 35s. That speaks dividends alone.

 

Same come resale time, what commands the most, a stock well maintained truck, period.

I would think a good dealership would at least be willing to scan for codes.

As far as the modding VS keeping it stock debate; I think most guys understand that lift and big tires will cause parts to wear faster. But, there's also a huge difference between 2-3" of lift on 33's and 6" of lift on 35's. If done properly, a lift doesn't automatically affect the longevity of a vehicle.

All the tacomas I’ve wrenched on, welded on, spent thousands on travel kits etc...I’ve learned that the stock tacomas failed a lot less when it counted.

I don’t have a chase team or rebuild my truck after every outdoor excursion, so I’d prefer it last the trip and then some. Which means proper drive angles all the way around.

Both sides of the argument have credible points, however, it's important not to communicate in absolutes.

As soon as you start wrenching on anything future issues are more likely, not always the case but there. I've seen my share of cheap parts, horrible installs, welds, and short cuts. Enough of those and you'll see why stock is a great option.

I will also say, if your idea of working on a car is opening the hood once a month to fill the window washer fluid. Maybe just keep it stock, I'm not saying you can't learn. But, anything that has been modified from mopeds to rocket ships requirers a bit more love and will give you more headaches down the road. Thats just my experience.

Exactly. Why anyone who has the slightest interest in diagnosing their own problems won't have something to scan codes is beyond me. I mean there's literally a system on your truck you can plug a sub $100 thing into that will tell you where it has flagged an issue. I now keep not one, but 2 readers in my truck.

 

Bought an older odb2 reader for under $20 to use on my 01 tundra when i got my my first check engine light at 120k. Turned out what i suspected with the heaters in the 02 sensors failing, but at least i knew which ones. Found later i should of just replaced all 4 of them at the same time instead of waiting for one at a time to crap out. Now if something craps out i'll need to get a newer code reader for the tacoma.

 

I'm here to say Stop Lifting your own codes! When you lift a code it changes the balance and the code won't last for 500,000 miles!! Raising your codes beyond OEM is probably what started the Coronavirus!

She is OEM though - except aftermarket "headlights"
