Hey guys, I have the rather annoying infamous engine tick comming from most noticeably the driver side of engine. Seems to get louder after warmed up. I don't notice the ticking at all while driving though, unless next to a wall or sound reflecting surface. Then I hear it a bit. Mostly at idle and from the outside of the truck. I have not taken it back to dealer yet or tried isolating an emmision valve on the head and near the oil filter? I hope this ticking can be quieted. I only got 1100 miles on her, it's a July 2007 build date. Is there a 2007 TSB for this or a fix other than trying the emmission o-ring? Other than the ticking, it's awesome! I love my truck!

I also hear the 'ticking' noise on my 2007 Tacoma TRD Sport V6 when the engine is warm and idling (or low rpm). I have approximately 20,000 kms on the truck but noticed this problem with extremely low mileage.

I've had the dealership look at the truck 3 different times and although I've had them admit to hearing the noise ONCE they claim there are no problems. It definitely sounds like a valve problem - I've tried several different grades of gasoline from different stations with no solid impact on what I'm hearing.

The 'tick' is very noticeable for both myself and my spouse when we listen (outside) while the truck is idling without having to press our ear to the body.

This is concerning that others have verified the same problem with the 2007 models and the fact that the only remedy seems to be a tear down and rebuild of the engine to fix the valves or whatever makes me wonder if the life span of the engine has been impacted.

The only other beef I have about the truck is the body paint - it's EXTREMELY easy to scratch the paint with a finger nail or even a cardboard box.

It's two plastic pieces that work along with the timing chain, it will not do any harm.

I'll second raptors complaint about the paint. i have several small scratches in my paint, seems to be very easy to scratch.

Can anybody else confirm that it is a timing chain issue? I also have a 2007 Tacoma 4 litre, and I also have the tick.

so how did you go about getting this done? did you print off the TSB and take it to the dealer and no questions asked fixed it? How long did that ordeal take to get done? thanks in advance

I'm in a Toyota club here in the Dallas area and the task at hand was pulling the entire motor out of this old 4runner and the guy doing most of the work, works at Toyota of Dallas, told me it was the timing chain. That it wouldn't do any harm and if I remember right, that it would pretty much go away after about 10-15k miles.

Hey guys/gals...I just bought a slightly used 05' 2wd 2.7 4cyl, does the 4cyl apply to this TSB? Also, how do you read the vin# on the TSB? I have a letter where the TSB shows a * then an X where the TSB shows a U. If I read this right my X comes after the U, so I'm ok???

Can You update on what happened with your Truck? Toyota gave you any kind of answer? I filed a complain with the Consumer Bureau and Toyota did not even showed up, they just decided to pay a 1,000 USD penalty for doing so. It is quite frustrating hearing that noise and the only answer toyota gives is that it is a normal noise for tacomas.

I also have had an steering problem for over a year now, and the dealer just keeps saying that it was a missalignement and that is being corrected. My truck is a 4X2 but it appears to have the soul of a 4X4! it constantly goes to the left or to the right at speeds over 55mph.

I think more people should complain about problems with tacomas. Toyota is not up to their "Legendary Quality".

    Have a good day.

I used to work for toyota and Ive been working with toyota's for years. Everyone that i have ever worked on has had a tick.. we all call it the TOYOTA TICK. Some are louder then others but it is the design of the heads and how the valves are shimmed. no matter how you shim them and what kind of oil you put in them they are still going to tick... my 96 sounds just like a diesel and i drive it 100 miles everyday. It has 196,000 and counting I've never had any problems out of it.. when it breaks ill fix it.. lol.

Thanks for that comment superlinerms. I now have over 10,000 miles on mine and have changed to Castrol Syntec full synthetic oil. Guess what? the tick is still there. I have grown very used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore. I never even hear it unless I'm outside of the truck while it's running. I've kind'a grown fond of it in a way.
No one should let this bother them. The Toyota tick will be there from now till never, and so will your Taco. That's what counts! ;)

I have the tick as well, I have tried the o rings and they didnt do anything. My truck sounds really bagged out too. I took it to the dealership in Canada where I live with an american TSB for the manifold replacement printed out. They found the canadian TSB that matched and will be replacing the manifolds when the parts arive. I will post back with my outcome after it is done.

i have read about everything on this site about the ticking. I believe most of it is either on the driver side or passenger. When the window is down, driving up against a retaining wall or another vehicle for that matter, it is a very annoying ticking or dinging sound.

Two dealerships could not fix this in a total of 8 working days.

I finally decided to try to fix it myself. What I found was that the front calipers have two pad keeper pins with no bushings whatsoever. They flop around very badly.

Temporarily, I put zip ties between the cotter pins and the caliper to reduce the play.

This worked. I have found that there are suppose to be bushings and grease appied to these parts and that my brand new 2009 does not have either.

I'm still trying to get my hands on the correct way to put this together.
