What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Repaired my frozen spare tire carrier winch. All three coils of the cable were rusted to the spool at the same spot, right at the beginning of the winding point.

I had to drill out the 4 rivets holding it together. Forgot to take a picture, but I welded it closed instead of putting back the rivets, since the heads were rusted in place.

I filed out the rust with a small 4 sided file. I lubed it up real well but the welding bubbled/burned it out! Had to re-apply. Worked real well after finished.

 

Also cut out the holes in my new rear frame section for the spare tire carrier. Plasma cutter made some nice clean holes. I have it extended 3" out ech side. The Right side will be where I re-attach the tailpipe hanger to the new frame. The left side may get bobbed off, but since the new bed plan is not set, I will leave it there for now.

Also, went ahead an put my fuel tank back in for now so the truck is mobile.

So, I fucked up.... Zuk had it figured out within a few minutes. My rear pinion bearing race was not seated completely. It felt seated and wasn’t able to drive it in further, but upon inspection with a mirror, I could tell it was not. I pulled the race, scotch brighted it and cleaned it and it drove home with a brass drift after a bit of effort. I didn’t get my gears totally set today, but got them narrowed down within 0.008. Probably 2 more times of tearing it down and I’ll have it dialed in.

I still hop on and browse! I just don’t post much these days. Life has been crazy the past few years but I will hopefully be able to put some money and time into my truck this winter. I say that every year, but this time is different.

Pretty sure @ToyotaDriver will eventually force me to do a truck trip at some point, haha.

Nah keep on him. He eventually comes out. He's a good dude so keep on the pressure, you have near proximity which helps a lot haha

 

I've never been a fan of adjustable jack stands. All this really makes me wanna get off my lazy ass and just make some fixed height for the front and rear.

 

I try and just use two 8x8s under mine on the lowest settings usually.

 

I've used adjustable jack stands for as long as I've worked on vehicles... never had a problem...





But they have never been from Harbor Frieght.

 

yeah i don't trust my Harbor Freight jackstands anyways. i used to have a set of 6 tons which worked ok but when they got recalled i took the opportunity to buy some other shit from there with the store credit and pick up a set of used USA made ones. I only bought my 3 tons to support my axle when i was installing the rear suspension, and given that they've already given out once under just the axle i wouldn't trust them to hold the truck up. i can deal with a bent brake dust shield... all that takes a a pair of vise grips or channellocks to get bent back. on the other hand i can't deal with a brake drum crushing my balls after the shit jack stands give out while i'm trying to replace a rear brake line or something.

 

I’ve been saying that for 4 years now!

 

I have as well, doesn't mean I trust them.
