Payload and probably tongue weight too. There's more than just max trailer weight.

Y'all can be proud of that useless spec, I really don't give a shit. That spec has absolutely nothing to do with "SAFETY"..
Have a good day, and I pray I never have to dig your ass out of a ditch because you bought the wrong truck.

2x150 equals one 300 pound person. Far from idiotic.

So what spec is there, 'chat board truck central' ?
18 wheelers have little cabs that pull big loads (stability speaking). Just sayin.
Guess they bought the right small cab ?

    totally unrelated but...

i towed a chevy cavalier on a tow dolly with a chevy avalanche like 700 miles and was the worst experience of my life. White knuckles for 10 hours.

I even got a rash on my lower back from sweating non stop

That's only 66% of rated load. Easy.
Now depends on hills, mountains or flat terrain.

A 300lb person trying to squeeze into the tiny Taco's cab and driver's seat would be worthy of a YouTube video...

    Towing specs are overrated IMO.
I agree with you that on hills is another question.

Now hook up 5K lbs to your Tacoma and try to get up and over Red Ridge Pass. There are much better options out there if you want to tow a big trailer.

I tow a small expedition trailer all over the states with the Tacoma, If I need to tow a Toybox or anything larger, I use a 1ton.

Did you ever hear of the following terms and understand their meanings?
    GCWR Gross Combination Weight Rating
    GVWR Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
    GAWR Gross Axle Weight Rating
    TWR Trailer Weight Rating
    Tongue Weight
    Total Load Capacity
Frontal Area (drag is generally considered proportional to the square of speed. Towing a Jeep with min frontal area is much easier than towing same weight with an 8' high x 7 'wide travel trailer)

All of these impact your maximum towing capacity. All of them have to be considered per SAE j2807. Claiming that you truck's max tow rating is 6400 lbs is absolutely true, if (and it is a huge if) you ALSO meet every one of those individual specifications. This is not an opinion, it is in your owner's manual and SAE rating.

Toyota (to their credit) provides fourth-grade arithmetic examples on how to calculate the results in the owner's manual. You don't see that kind of detail in say, a Ford Super Duty manual.

Your truck has lowest payload capacity of any Tacoma, a measly 950 lbs. If you put a 220 lb person in the driver's seat and hook up a trailer with a tongue weight of 630 lbs, and toss a dirt bike in the bed that weighs 250 lbs you are overweight per the SAE standard. Your max towing capacity just went from 6,400 lbs down to 6,250.

Add one 150 lb person and a couple of coolers in the bed or put a cap on the bed and your max trailer capacity now drops to under 6,000 lbs.

Max tow rating is just that: The MAX, typically with an empty bed and no more than a small driver and one small passenger in the truck and nothing else. Zip. Nada. No lift, no E rated tires, No armor, No cap, No nothing.

Do you realize what the English word "Maximum" means?

Hey OP....take the advice from people who have actually towed a travel trailer. My last trailer was about just as long and 500lbs more and it did just fine. Just take it easy and be smart. Your truck is more than capable of towing that.

I had a sierra, very similar to the avalanche, and towed all sorts of shit with it, including a car on a dolly, with some loads wayyyy over spec. It handled great every time.
Was your trailer trying to wag around or something?

Agree with you 100%. Most people on here saying a Tacoma can’t do it are the same dipshits that pass you on the freeway going 75mph with a trailer hooked up to them. Yeah you try and do that with a Tacoma you’re better off sticking a fork in a power outlet. (The sign says 3 axles or more 55 MAX for a reason) I have a 2019 TRD OR SB with HD rear springs, 2.5 resi’s front 2.0 resi rear, 32’s, low profile OR bumpers, and I tow a MicroMinnie 2306BHS and the truck does flawlessly. Granted it has a tune and I always use S4 mode with ECT, but long as you pick up on your grades wisely and you have a quality WDH, these trucks can do it comfortably. The only real downside to towing with a midsize is fuel capacity, but otherwise these trucks can haul. Did I mention the truck had a shell, decked drawers, and a RTT on it on my last outing with the trailer? Sure I’m modified but isn’t that why we modify? So we can do things stock folks can’t? This is prior to the trip when I picked up the trailer from service.98D9A72F-F874-445F-8825-6988EFA02C33.jpgC4530BC9-A092-4157-BE15-5B81691F85E3.jpg

I own a 16 foot 3400lb gross travel trailer and will say 4400lb is a hard no one my 2019 off-road.
