Wow it’s been awhile my 07 taco extended cab has gotten to small for my family and I’m thinking of getting a new double cab my ? Is crawl control really worth it or is plane Jane regular four wheel drive good enough? It probably won’t see any trails but it will get used a lot when we have snow in the winter!

I just bought a 2019 TRD offroad double cab back in november. I would say that CRAWL is not worth it. I've owned three jeeps before this and been wheeling for about 15 years. The rear locker however is worth it. So if you can get a 4x4 with a rear locker I don't see a good reason to pay more for any of the TRD packages. I would even explore getting a basic 4x4 and adding an aftermarket rear locker. If that's more economical I would go with that.

Also, wanted to add that the standard bed on the double cab is way to short. I didn't think it would be a problem but more often than not I wish I got a longer bed.

If you don’t intend on doing any trails, then I would think 4WD is enough. Honestly 4 Lo is good enough for most things. If it’s not enough, then a locking rear diff would be the next step.

If snow is your concern, then 4WD, skinny tires, and chains would be enough.

Honestly, 2wd is all you need. Jk. You should really be thinking about non elocker vs elocker instead.

There is a gigantic thread somewhere in this forum regarding crawl control and its potential (significant) issues. Until that gets sorted, I'd say it's probably not worth it.

There are reported issues with CC on the new 2020's. There's a current thread about it, I'd read up and test a 2020 w/ cc prior to purchasing to make sure it works as advertised. It's been hit or miss on the 2020's and mine is working just fine.

I use the multi terrain select more then the crawl control. Both are nifty to have, but they are just bonus goodies to the rear diff locker

I've done trails at Uwharrie, Rausch, and AAOA. I also regularly do sand driving on the beach. Granted mine is a 4 cylinder manual, no lockers, and I didnt try these trails in the snow or really bad conditions. No crawl control here. I put it in 4 lo and just slowly go over everything. Seems like good wide AT tires make the most difference. Depending on how much the option cost it might be more cost effective to buy a TRD OR, and use the money to buy a prebuilt from diff with an E-locker. Locker in the front and rear would hands down win over crawl control or anything computer controlled any day. Most people I've been around just get a rear locker since the front diff isn't as strong and they seem to go everywhere they point the wheels anyway so realistically a front locker is probably not even needed. You're money is definitely better spend on other mods.

Crawl control is not a model, it's a feature added to ORs and Pros, it's one of several features like a rear locker, suspension, etc.
I wouldn't pay extra for CC, but I did buy the OR model for various reasons, CC none of them.

The Worth it question; no one knows your life situations, so that's not a question we can answer.

Simple, better to have it and not need it , than need it and not have it. With that said, I’ve only used it a few times in three years. Worked for me.

Depends what aspect of CC you're talking about... the speed control or getting unstuck. Definitely useful for controlling downhill speed, not so useful controlling uphill speed, and mixed results using it to get unstuck.

    Overall, it's nice to have.

Crawl control is awesome. Sounds like shit but works great on steep loose decents and Climbs

Based on your initial question, I would say just get a regular 4X4. I have CC and haven't used it yet, but I have used the terrain select a few times. If I had to do it all over again I would have gotten a 4X4 SR5 less things that could break later. Like others have have said you can add an aftermarket rear locker. That said, really boils down to your needs and wants. Good luck.

Buying strictly for the crawl control option makes no sense. It's a cute gimmick for certain situations but it really doesn't make the truck any more capable. The traction control adds a little legit capability and a locker is always the critical requirement if you're looking for real capability.

Since you're not looking to hit any trails and just winter snow you'll find the best value in a base 4wd with the stock Toyota traction aids.

The locker is worth it alone.

    MTS is another fantastic bonus

Crawl control can be great if you know what to expect.

I've hit many moderate trails and never used it other than once just to see what it was all about and make sure it worked. I thought it was weird and haven't used it since. I don't think it will do you much good in snow other than if you want to ascend/descend a really steep slick hill at a snails pace, then maybe? It seems to be a good idea but the execution doesn't really seem to work. Also many new Tacoma's it literally doesn't seem to work at all. The other features that come with the off road package I do like however.

Locker, MTS and CC or none of the above. TRD ORs also have excellent resale. I say go for it - like others have said it's best to have it and not use it than need it and not have it. I should actually test CC's merits in the snow this coming winter. Maybe then I'll actually be able to say whether it's useful or not lol

I have used CC a few times, never out of necessity, more just to mess around with it. The reports are true, the sound and feel is weird, but it works as advertised. The rear diff lock is probably more important and useful than the CC. As I understand it the CC is in place of a front locker. Not as hard on the axles, but not as good either.
I saw a YouTube video of two 3rd gens crawling in CO(?) one with a front locker one with CC. Both made it over all
obstacles, the front locked rig definitely had an easier time with it, very smooth.
I haven’t played around with MTS yet. But as some have stated CC is only only one of many features the Off road has over the SR5. All about intended use.

We've used the CC in my wife's Tacoma once, coming down Red Cone in CO. The truck is re-geared to 4.88, but will still run away from you in low range if the grade is steep enough. In this case, CC acted as a pseudo low low range, as I didn't have to ride the brakes to keep from accelerating. Frankly, I'd buy the TRD OR; there's any number of reasons you may find to use it, at some point, even if they aren't obvious now.
