Going CRAZY Tire Shopping!! HELP!!

I never thought it would be such a difficult task picking out new tires for my 2014 Tacoma Pre-Runner! I'm literally going insane with the various options, yet overall...I just want a more aggressive look than the stock tires (265/65R/17).

I'm going to PlastiDip my wheels so I can save money there, and have narrowed it down to these tires:

* BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
* Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac
* Falken Wildpeak AT3W

At the moment, I'm leaning toward the DuraTrac. Obviously, the Wildpeaks are the most inexpensive, yet I don't know if they would have an aggressive enough look. Do any of you have pictures of these tires on a Black Tacoma? I guess it doesn't matter what color, but wanted to see something similar to my truck.

Please please...someone make the decision for me, ha!

 

Go to the tire shop and put all three together on the floor and look at them. You'll know which one you want to buy.
Get C load, keep the weight down. around 45lbs for the 265 70 17s.

Damn, don't make it more difficult by adding more for me to choose from, ha! I live in Nashville so we don't get much snow at all. Ideally, I want an aggressive look.

Can someone explain what a wider tire would be than my current size of 265/65R/17? I understand the 17 inch is the wheel, so that needs to stay.

 

The first number is the width of the tire in MM. the second number is a percentage of the width (aspect ratio) and third is obviously rim diameter. So here’s how it works with your numbers
265 X .65 = 172.25. This is the height of the sidewall. Multiply this Number by 2
172.25 X 2 = 344.50. This is the total tire sidewall height- divide this by 25.4 to switch to inches
344.50 \ 25.4 = 13.56
Add this to the wheel diameter
13.56 + 17 = 30.56. So basically a 31” tall tire.
To convert width just divide 265/25.4= 10.43 so basically 10.5
So if you went to a 70 series tire it would be 1” bigger diameter but truck would sit .5” taller
I can’t speak for the Goodyear but between the BFG and falken I’d go falken all day long. To me better tire and less expensive. Like someone said before if your not doing any serious off-road try to stick to a C rated tire to save cost and weight and MPG

 

THANK YOU! That makes a lot of sense now. If I were to go with the Falken 70 series, would I have any problems with rubbing? I am also having a 2" level kit installed as well.

 

No, you will be fine with 265 70 17
Some go skinny 255 80 17

This tire will not rub especially with factory wheels. If you went to a 285 70 17 (33”) you would most likely rub and if you got a wheel with more offset or spacers (pushing Wheel edge outward you even more likely to rub.
On the note of lifting- a lift does not mean you can fit a larger tire. Yeah it’ll be fine sitting there but put the suspension into motion at most points the tire will ultimately go up into the wheel well. Some of the 4-6” bracket lifts will limit upward travel relative the wheel well but it sounds like you’re just raising static ride height. Hope that makes sense without going too crazy with detail?

 

If you want to save some $$$, go on 4WP and pick a set of (4) Toyo open country atii’s 265/70r17 load range C for $451 plus tax and free shipping. They are running $200 off Toyo deals right now. Just bought a set today.

That would be a good choice that you won’t regret. Just make sure that they offer the size you want in a C rated tire. This can be debated all day long but at the end of the day just doing daily driving and maybe the occasional trail a C will be more than adequate.

 

Yep, just called to make sure that they get the 115's (46lbs) rather than the 121's (53lbs).
