Replacing Spark Plugs at 60K mile service

Just got a quote from my dealer on a 60k mile service for my 2016 TRD Sport MT. I knew it would be expensive since the XFER case, transmission and gearboxes require fluid change. But the quote of $599 to change the spark plugs seems high. Is this really the going rate for new plugs? I'm looking at well over a $1000 for the complete 60k mile service.

 

Pretty sure there's a few members on here who have done it themselves pretty easily. And yes $600 sounds pretty steep.

Yes having the dealer do it is expensive, the plugs themselves aren't cheap then add in dealer rates and supposedly having to remove a bunch of stuff to get at the plugs. The link in the sticky is a much easier way

Spark plugs only cost about 10 dollars each. Intalling them is very simple, just have to be careful not to drop anything in the spark plug hole. $600 is ridiculous and I doubt those dealer mechanics would be as careful as you woild be working on your truck.

 

$17/ plug for oem at discount price.

 

Well from a dealership perspective it’s about right. It’s gonna be $110 for new plugs from Toyota though I recommend getting the Iridium tips and with miscellaneous shop fees and 3 hours of labor that’s about $600.

Every 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometers) or 24 months:

•Replace spark plugs (non-platinum or iridium type)
•Service the cooling system (drain, flush, and refill)
•Change the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) and filter**
•Change the cabin air filter
•Change the transfer case lubricant (4WD models)
•Change the differential lubricant*
•Change the manual transmission fluid (MTF)*
•Change the brake fluid

 

I was quoting more the labor part than the part cost.

Ive been replacing sparkplugs since before I knew what I was doing, it aint that hard.
Ive replaced plugs on marine engines, and everything from my sisters 69 Nova SS to a 2019 Honda CRV. 600 is a lot for plugs.

 

What am I missing here...?

 

It's my understanding the fluid changes are required because I frequently tow a camper.

 

I do as well, but unless it's over 50% of the mileage you put on your truck I think you're safe.
But toyota doesnt really specify what "special operating conditions" actually means, so your guess is as good as mine. If you want to change those fluids at 60k, go for it. I wont knock it

 

Did you ask him why he wasn't wearing a ski mask? That's crazy. You can do all of that yourself. It's not hard at all.

 

Sorry, the 30k was the old fluid swap for the MT.


But the others still apply for most trucks. Real world application, is it needed? Most say probably not. But that's just the guidance.

Living on a dirt road qualifies you for a xfer case fluids swap and having a simple roof top carrier qualifies you for transmission... And diffs.... Somehow.


But if the trucks hauls absolutely nothing more than groceries and sticks to pavement, I probably wouldn't worry about it.


Except the plugs. They're pretty adamant about the plugs.

 

Well there you have it, @TacomaTRDman. Two varying opinions. I tow a camper as well and waited until 100k miles to change tranny, transfer, differentials, coolant and power steering fluid.

With the condition of the fluids that came out, if I was back to a brand new truck I would have started doing regular drain and fills of the tranny at 50k and changed the front differential fluid at 50k as well. Everything else still seemed fine.

Neither of us is right or wrong, what you want to do is up to you

Oh and ps: definitely change the plugs.

Maybe, but cant knock someone for wanting to maintain their vehicle. And with toyotas vague "special operating conditions" section you could very well be right for the OP.

I can knock someone for paying $1k to have dealership do it though. OP, if you are not the kinda guy who likes to wrench on your vehicles, that fine, but please find yourself a decent mechanic and save some money
