    Hello all,

I own a '14 Tacoma 4-Cyl, 2.7 liter which I use as my daily driver and also for weekend Camping. I know that this truck is completely underpowered but I would still like to add a mod that can add some more power or boost performance.
Issues I face, overtaking on highways, gas pedal needs to be floored, trying to reach 60/70m seems like a task.
Any suggestion that would help add more power is appreciated.

PS: please don't ask me to buy a v6 because I purchased what I could afford at that point.

I think the URD is a solid choice but I don't have any personal experience with them. The 4 cylinder forum will have more info on options though.

Don't know what trans you have, but I have a 2013, 2.7, 4X4. auto. Very low on power while driving at my normal 60 mph. At 1800 rpm. there is just no power to keep it going. I've started driving in 3 instead of D, & rpm. is up to around 2700 @ 60 mph. but just eases along, not straining at all & rarely shifting on hills. I've always figured the mileage at every fill up, thought the extra rpm. would lower the mpg. but the engine never being in a strain must make up for the extra rpm. the fuel mileage has not changed at all. A lot more comfortable to drive at 60 mph. Rarely on interstate, but then @ 75 mph. D works just fine.

Anything that's going to add enough power to make a noticeable end effective difference is going to cost at least as much as the difference between the 4 and 6 cylinder so if you couldn't afford a v6 then don't bother trying to add power to your 4 cylinder. I suggest you adjust your driving style and expectations. The 4 cylinder has enough power for safe, normal, everyday driving and should have no trouble getting up to 80 on the freeway or maintaining 55 on upgrades even with some weight. Plenty of people including myself using the 4 cylinder on heavy 4x4 camping rigs with no trouble.

4 cylinder owner here. Yes, it's completely underpowered. But it will get you there. Just learn to be patient  If you are driving at high elevation, >8k feet, you'll really need to be patient! At high elevation, when climbing mountain passes is the only time it bothers me because I have other vehicles passing me going 20+ MPH faster while I'm struggling at 50 MPH in third gear (5 speed MT)

Ignore the header suggestion unless you are combining it with a supercharger or turbo.. It’s bullshit alone. You might get 5 hp out of it. That’s not money well spent.

I get that and that would be my last resort to trade it in with a V6. I know these engine can throw some good power. My merc is a 4+turbo and though its apples to oranges I am not expecting the same here(just an example). Because I know something is wrong with my truck and it can throw some more.
Anyway thank you for your suggestions

Yeah lots of the issue right there. A manual 2.7L is better. I go through the gears faster to get up to speed if needed. I hear there’s a throttle response kit by Petal commander I think that might help, might be something you’d like.

I did put the LCE header, helps some, but not much. But really keeping weight down as much as possible. Keeping to stock tire size, or if larger tires, try narrow and lighter.

    Sound advice.

I've done aftermarket forced induction. If cost is a concern, this is not a good value with all there is to consider to make it reliable/responsible power. It would be on parity with getting a V6 in cost, but you sacrifice reliability. The beauty of the 4 banger is that it is bomb proof. Do you have the 4 or 5 speed trans? You can look it up on https://www.toyota.com/owners/ by imputing your VIN after you sign up (free). The 5th gear would help in your situation. The 4 banger produces decent, flat torque from 1500-4500 RPM.

The electronic add on tuners will change your throttle response, but they are not going to give you noticeably more power. You would be better off spending $300 on lighter camping gear.
