I went to install a brake controller this evening and found this wire exposed. Anyone know what it’s for and if it goes into the other end of this fuse?

Looks like a aftermarket alarm/remote start set up.
Is the red wire part of the factory harness or the alarm harness.?
You could unwrap the electrical tape to see if there are any connectors missing a wire.

That empty spot on the fuse maybe? The black wire going up toward the dash goes to the aftermarket alarm.

It's possible, even rather likely but hard to know with your picture, unwrap the electrical tape and see what's going on in there, only way to know is to open it up and check.

Took off a lot of tape to get to this point.

Simple electrical terminal set from most anywhere will have the connector you need.
You'll need some crimping pliers as well of course.

Safe to assume it goes on that spot then?

Harness has an extra wire loose, has a connector that has a wire pulled out of it that is in the correct place for your extra wire to go there.
Thats just about the best indication that's where it goes.

Lick it before you stick it. If it doesn’t seem right, it ain’t.

    Thats some hacked together BS.
Yes, that appears to be where the wire goes.

That's a hack job at best... I'd be tracing down all the wiring and removing it avoid future headaches.

It def goes there or else that fuse is useless. I was going to say with a red wire, that normally mean (+V) so don't accidentally touch it's end to anything like metal chassis or frame as you can damage whatever device is connected to it if this is "an always powered" line as opposed to "acc/ign on powered" line as bear in mind, at this point that circuit is NOT fused. Disconnecting the car's battery is always the safest before you start to work if you're worried about this. You need a blue insulated female spade terminal. Re-crimp, pull that old empty spade off and toss it. I must admit, whomever did this wasn't OCD or worried about cleanliness. Very hastily put together.
