I suppose it's good at an entry level. I'm kinda just hoping it lasts a trip or two, the axle is solid far as I can tell. Just some scale, but no leaks or evidence of bends.

Welding is easy, it's basically metal glue, except you can charge incapable people a lot for what's essentially a glorified art project. I never mind welding, it's cutting that's annoying.

It won't be the third that explodes it'll be the axle shaft or tube end that bends and wrecks the bearing and seal

Considering the hit my tundra took, I replaced the axle shaft.

Only to check it after the fact and find out it was perfectly straight.... I do believe they’re stronger than you give them credit. It hit hard enough to shatter the bearing race, but the axles true.

A full-time locked axle is a liability in the dirt. No welding gears for me, but I won't waste money putting an ARB in this thing. Maybe a little lunchbox locker or something, since they're cheap

I have never seen a Toyota LSD third show up anywhere. My guess would be they end up in the pre pick yard and the price would be more than this housing with open third was.

Detroit still requires resetting lash and such. Not worth the effort or money on an 8.4. I can put a lunchbox locker in without taking the gears apart and if it blows up it's an easy fix. But most of them slip and ratchet making it less likely to just up and explode despite the size. It's all temporary for this thing. A Detroit is an expensive piece that is honestly kinda lame, part time selectable lockers are the way to go, like the Eaton, Harrop, ARB, ZipLocker. I'll do one of those when I can do a centered 80 series diff
