It would be good to hear about any recoveries that you do with them.

Exactly. I don't get how people get explosive potential energy out of chain. Chain doesn't store energy (does not stretch) when used within its work load ratings.

I tried searching youtube for recoveries using the demon mounts/shackles. Only found installation videos. Maybe I'll drag my wife's Camry around the yard this afternoon and video it:D

That is half the fun, well at least until the shovels have to come out.

And he stood right by it. And he hooked to the hitch ball. Mostly though, don't stand there by something under that kind of stress. I do dumb stuff all the time and that's beyond me.

Yeah. The hitch ball would be the big no-no there. I was mainly looking at how easily the post comes up compared with other methods.

Chains absolutely store energy as well as wire rope. They do stretch, just not an amount you can visibly see.

Yeah, I like the method a lot. Also works it someone is stuck low in mud. Posts completely blow to remove. Digging out 3ft of concrete makes for a long day.

I carry an appropriate length of trucker chain for tree and brush clearing on trails (from Harbor Freight, no less). Straps will abrade in situations like that. The chain can also be used in a pinch to redirect pulls with a winch, if necessary. I wouldn't use it for recovery of a stuck vehicle, however. (Though, I have seen them used with a High Lift jack as a come-along. That method scares the crap out of me!)

If it is rated properly it shouldn't stretch very much. Anytime I've ever had a chain fail it was the eye on the end or a link near the end rusted out. Never had a catastrophic overload.
Or feel. I have seen idiots try to snatch logs with chain. Luckly the chain they were using was well over the rating needed to do the job. It was like watching a dog run to the end of its leash.:ballchain:

Yeah, the hook end is held on with a pin. I would think that is a frequent failure point. Chains have their place, just have to be careful any time you are dealing with that kind of stress.

We used an engine hoist on some 3/4" ply a couple weekend ago to pull a few. Worked really well. In the past, we used a 4x4 across 2 floor jacks and a strap. That was not as good...

Didn't have access to a cherry picker but I'm sure it would work great. Floor jack was better than breaking our backs.

That's pretty cool. I think there was a vid showing that after the spare tire one ended.

I still need to get him excited about doing it. It would hopefully the only use my spare will get.

Fore sure. Using 2 was terrible because if you didn't lift them at the same rate, the 4x4 would slip with fucking gusto and you had start over.

I looked at these and have concerns. They don't mention any ratings or even material thickness. They don't even specifically say they can be used for recovery or towing. I can't tell if they are functional or just for adding shackles for looks. Someone try them out and take video. From their description:

Demon Brackets - Tacoma Factory Tow Hook Replacement Brackets

Allows for easy installation of Demon Hooks

Eliminates the need to purchase an aftermarket bumper to hang your hooks on

Heavy-duty laser cut fabricated steel construction

Bolt-on installation - no modifications required to install.

Ideal for adding stylish aftermarket hooks/shackles to your truck.

    For use with factory bumpers

I think there was discussion on these a while ago and the company said something along the lines of "cosmetic purposes only". Someone could dig that up, I'm sure.
