It depends on your perspective? Personally, I'm a 2017 fan. No TSS-P plus mine is a non-Tech / non-Premium. I wanted an ACLB MT with factory tow package. Since we don't get the ACLB MT OR, the choice was made for me.

Well tonered and Masterofnone have a valid point. The'17's have little of the 'nanny stuff'.

I'm hoping for a long, happy time with the Taco. Hopefully the gizmos that I do have are trouble-free for the duration.

Ask your friend to see if he can do some digging also and see what info he can come up with from the inside.
Would love to know the answer to this mystery.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but call your local Toyota parts warehouse with your VIN and ask them to look up an external trans cooler. If the truck isn't supposed to have one by the build sheet (for whatever reason) then the parts catalog should reflect as such. If it does show to have one then you have some more reference to show the service manager to inquire why yours doesnt have one. Just my $.2 from a parts guy.

If that is the case, then there should be a corporate bulletin accessible by the dealership explaining as such.

Nah, the 17s will, 16s were really the only Tacomas with issues. The 18s came with TSS which is problematic for aftermarket changes and offroading

I think the 18 may be a great year, tss works perfect on mine as it saved my ass two times. I'm running a two inch up front and a one inch rear lift, and a pro grill. No issues with mine, as I'm aware of the service buliton I'm not having the dealership do anything. I hope the OP gets this resolved, as the service advisor is full of shjt. Call the.parts dept and check it against the build sheet.

Just think, by eliminating the cooler on 249,000 tacos sold in 2019, at say a low figure of $50, they just saved themselves 12.5 million dollars.

I'm glad it works for you but not for everybody, do some decent offroading and you'll see more issues.

Again, no issues what so ever and in fact I have another Tacoma, same set up and no issues. Out of the thousands of lifted Tacoma trucks out there we read about a small percentage of issues.

That is only logic if all the other vehicles in its class that have tow packages don't have separate trans coolers also. If they are needed or not is beside the point.
When comparing two vehicles head to head to a consumer who may or may not have plans to tow anything, when one has a cooler and the other doesn't it could cost much more in loss of sales than 12.5 million saved on omitting the cooler.

If I was on the fence on 2 trucks and thought I may ever own a boat or camper or just had the mindset of better to have and no need than I would pick the one with the cooler.

I just had a long discussion with the service mgr.
He is very knowledgeable it seems. He said he spent 3 hours researching everything. They can go much deeper into the truck info than we can using a VIN. He couldn't find anything that shows my truck should have an external cooler. He admits that certain things do not make sense to him either. He looked at five tacoma ORs and one Pro. All the offroads had coolers however the Pro did not. Yes, it is an automatic. The Pro was built 03/19/2020 in San Antonio and the others in Baja. He said it was unlikely both plants ran out of coolers, particularly because the San Antonio plant has vendors on campus. Because of his findings he says he cannot do a warranty claim on it. He said he has read the same advertising as me but I guess that doesn’t matter.

You could make this same argument about rear drum brakes (all the competition is disc) on the Taco but it doesn't seem to hurt sales. I doubt that most of the general public would ever even know the cooler was missing and this won't make a difference in sales.

That is not a definitive enough answer from him that would get me to stop pressing the issue. If I had the same truck as the 5 sitting on the lot and they all had coolers and mine didn't then that's enough for me to say it's somethings not right. The pro is a different model so can be considered an exception and I would treat it as such even though it makes no sense for it to not have one either.

Its the difference between a factory tow package and a random dealer add on one. The dealer add on ones just add the tow bar and call it a tow package. The factory ones are more involved. I would feel like I only got half my tow package or a dealer added package which is not a factory package and what I assumed I was getting.

Very true, and good point. I guess I was looking at it from my perspective but I guess I'm not the avg. consumer like most on this forum. We tend to dive a little deeper into our auto decisions.

Good info. Sorry if I missed it, but your Taco was built where?

You might want to get that info from the two or three other folks who posted here that they don't have coolers either.

    That may solve the mystery.

I would ask that same service manager to do the same research on one of the ORs he has on the lot and see if it "shows something that it has an external cooler". If it does, then that would strengthen his case. If it does not, then that would strengthen yours!

    Good luck,
    Ted
