AZ off roading and trail ridding can go across some pretty sharp rocks (besides a lot of sand ...). What tires do folks like around here for the rocks?

Falcon wildpeaks E rated but it’s been overkill. Probably perfectly fine with C rated, not to mention weight savings. Too bad D rated is hard to come by, that’d be the perfect balance.

If you are in sharp rock territory, especially if you run the trails at night, go E Rated. That's what they (10-ply equivalency) are about.

My wildpeaks eventually chunked badly. I'm using KM3s now and love them

I used to run Goodyear RMT mud terrains on my jeep and dually. Good in the mud, but they used to chunk very badly. Don't know about the more recent MT/R's.

I'm running Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrain, but are an exclusive to Discount Tire. They have been out since Late Sept. 2018 and are very close to the Duratrac's. I've had them since Oct. 2018 and love them so far. I was a BFG AT KO and then KO2 fan, but switched to the UltraTerrain to see how'd they handle. Also, at that point BFG got rid of the Snow rating on their tires when they switched to a 50K warranty. Last I heard is that Discount Tire now has both versions of the KO2's in Snow rated, and the 50k backed warranty non-snow rated.

The whole issue with the difference in the KO2's was all brought on from enough people complaining that they didn't get close to 40k out of the original KO2 version. My educated guess is that they were worse than the KO's.

I will say that the UltraTerrain's are great in the snow though. Been through a number of snowstorms with them and no issues so far.

I've always been a fan of the Goodyear kevlar MT/Rs. I prefer the older tread design, but they are still my favorite rock tire.

Toyo MT's are outstanding for our sharp sidewall cuts ran 32PSI and 12/14psi off road with my campersetup. 10 ply and they balance with 1-3oz so quiet on the highway as long as you rotate often to prevent cupping. Loved the grip of Goodyear MT/R's but had 3 out of 5 go out of round on a 3,500 mile trip and destroyed my carrier bearing in the process of trying to get home. Milestar Patagonia's MT has been really quiet and affordable but I have to run more pressure on highway because they are designed to run on the center tread pattern so the chalk tire pressure doesn't work 37 psi on road and still experimenting with off-road tire pressure 22 psi is actually really comfortable and grippy since they don't have the crazy stiff Toyo Sidewalls. they really conform to the trail off-road, and work in Snow. what sucks now that i re-geared to 4.88's I need to get taller tires, but can't fit their 35" tires.

I’ve used km2’s on a couple vehicles and they’ve been great. Really, most mud terrains will do well in the rocks. D rated tires are overkill, your safety net for saving your tires is airing down to 10-15 psi.

Ive heard a lot of good things about the milestar patagonia tires. I’ll be trying a set of those next.

I should have mentioned ... this Taco is my daily driver, besides doubling as my fun vehicle for off-roading. I don't think this truck nor my skills will ever be to the level of Charoulou Gap. I am thinking of eventually getting to level of Difficult on the 5 point ratings or level 7 on the 10 point ratings. I've been on some 3 to 3.5 (or so I was told by the leader) with the stock Taco.

3 inch lift with Toytec Boss and All Pro UCA's up front. AP expedition leafs with Bilstien 5100 shocks in the back. 255/85/16 Cooper S/T Max tires. All Pro skids, rear bumper and sliders, Hidden winch mount with XRC 8000 winch. Dual Optima batteries with IBS combiner/isolator and solar. CMC. Auto sliding rear window mod, hidden CB, CVJ axles and plenty of other little mods.
Cooper ST Max is a good choice for an all-arrounder. Probably my next tire. I’m told that they get pretty noisy as they wear though.

I was considering Nitto Ridge Grapplers before going with milder Discovered AT3 4S'. Nitro makes some pretty thick side walls even on their SL rated tires.

I had nittos on a Tacoma and hated them. They would cut and tear too easily on the rocks. I would never recommend them for any serious off roader.

Would you mind elaborating more for my curiosity? What kind of Nitto's and what rating were they? When was this?

I am pretty sure they were the ridge grapplers, maybe the terra grapplers. But when going through rocks the side walls would cut easily, the lugs on the tread would chunk out easily, and overall the tire gripped well but their durability was crap. I’ve ran km2’s before on other more hardcore rigs and haven’t had half the issues. After my experience with nitto, I wouldn’t buy another set.

Anybody besides me like the General Grabber Red Labels? I’ve had three sets on my last truck, two were the old school design and the last set was the “new” model I think called the X3 (?). They were the 35x12.5x17 on an ‘02 F150 that was re-geared. I thought they were super sticky and great in the sand. I’ve got a Taco now, and I’ll be getting a set for it soonish.
