Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think it should be too much of an issue heat wise but I'll have to see through testing. I don't expect the whole device to even use 1A to be honest. An IMU would be pretty awesome to add, I'll have to grab some components to test that out. At this point I would probably need to add in a toggle button to switch between modes.

Yeah, it'll probably be okay as long as ambient temp isn't too high. Might consider a heat sink tho.

I've used a BNO055 IMU in the past, it works good with arduino. Its a pain in the behind with out the arduino library though, I did it with straight C and spent most of my time crying into my coffee

Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely something I will add later, a little bit of a stretch for this first version but I'm definitely looking to add it when I can.

I think at this point I am gonna look to replace the clock in my truck with this OLED. So I'll probably be adding a time keeping unit in there so I can still have a clock function on each screen.

Made some progress and finally got the initial connection for OBDII setup. Anyone with an ELM327 or similar bluetooth module would be able to connect.IMG_20200628_160603.jpg

Gonna start working on some nice graphics for the different variables from the truck. There will be a switch to change modes and settings in the final version, for now a lot is hard coded while I develop. Still working on mocking up a design for the module to fit in place of the OEM clock, nothing worth showing yet. My initial PCB layout is a little bit too large so I need to redesign the board. It's a little ugly at the moment but it has a spot to mount the screen and assemble in the the housing at least. Also got a time keeping IC to play with and put the circuit on the board with the battery needed to keep it accurate.

    Screen Shot 2020-06-30 at 12.56.10 AM.jpgScreen Shot 2020-06-30 at 12.56.30 AM.jpg

Still a lot left to do but all progress is good. I included a connection in the design that will utilize the factory clock connector, this way I won't need to tap any wires for the power or the illumination circuit.

What's the issue you're having with the clock location? I can print you an adapter for it when you have the final size for your pcb

No issue with the clock per say, I have a short in my dome circuit atm I need to source though. I have a 3D printer as well so I should be able to print a housing out once I sketch it up.

So when I got my truck, the clock was not working because the tip of a cigarette lighter power plug was jammed inside one of the power ports. Might be worth checking those for shorts.

Good info! I'm gonna be pulling the dash soon so I can install my new stereo and clean all the dust out. So I'll be using my multi meter to check everywhere. I miss my interior lighting. :annoyed:

I was able to find some connectors to make it easier to plug into the temperature sensors.

    Connector.jpg

Definitely makes it look at lot better compared to the electrical tape I was using before.

    Diff plug.jpg

The plug does stick out a bit on the rear diff, not sure if it's too far though.

    Plug size.jpg

Personally I doubt I will ever hit something hit that, but if someone did some serious offroading they might.

I found my short by the way. It was my dumb ass that left a wire bare behind the stereo. There is a blue/yellow wire that I think is a constant 12V for the interior dome circuit that was shorting everything. This is also one of the 4 pins on the back of the clock. I found it when I put in my new stereo so everything is working as should again!

Any update on this? I'm about to buy a camper to tow and would love to have this information available. Seriously, I will pay good money for that bit of kit. PM sent.

I ran into an issue with the prototype board I soldered up after changing some pins, this was on a perf board to verify my pin-outs and rule out inconsistencies with the breadboard circuit. Once I figure out what the issue is I will be ordering some manufactured PCBs like the ones from post #25 to test. I do have extra components to make other kits but I want to be sure it's working flawlessly before releasing anything.

Sounds good. Any intentions on adding an audible alarm at all? This is a great idea, good luck getting it dialed in.

I don't have a plan to have an alarm at this time. It wouldn't be too difficult to add but it would require one more component on the board. I figured I would have enough flashing icons for high temps that it would be enough to warn anyone. I personally don't like having too many things buzzing or beeping at me in my truck, not that I would hear it over music anyways.

    PXL_20201002_042351197.jpg

I finally got the time keeping component working and mocked up a simple little clock face for now. I may just go with a simple LCD looking digital clock though but it could be a setting that could be changed if anyone wants to have a "classy" time piece in their trucks haha. The chip that keeps time can actually hold a couple different dates in it's memory and it's pretty easy to get it to show the date in different formats. I am going to have a way to change between the clock screen and the temperature readout screen. I've also decided to wait on adding the OBDII stuff later as it would take a lot to integrate that nicely. The chip has built in wifi so maybe a later firmware would be able to update over the internet, but now I am keeping it simple with a temperature readout and clock only.

I definitely love all the suggestions on what else to add and I can foresee all these things being on the device at some point but for now I need to get a first version made and do the extra nice features later.
