If you know for sure it's the cats, replace them with CA approved Magnaflows and you'll be fine.

Do you have the dreaded P0420 code

unless your 4Runner is just crazy off, you will almost always pass with new cats (found this out on my 84 mustang) but make sure all your sensors are good. My o2 sensor went bad and when I went back two years later I had nothing left in my cat. Just an empty shell lol

My truck had a p0171 code for awhile tried a few different things and replacing the maf sensor fixed that. Still have the p0420 code though. I think maybe the lean running condition might’ve damaged my upstream cat. It rattles inside if I bang on it. Really need to get someone to read some live data on it though. I don’t have smog testing where I live so I’ve just been clearing the code until I get around to fixing it.

airmax I think I’m gonna end up doing two new ones from either of the companies on this thread referenced, the prices weren’t too steep so if it doesn’t pass again I can figure it out from there but at least fresh cats

I’m going to try to get away with just replacing the downstream cat. Hopefully that solves the issue. Will report back to this thread with results

Update, I bit the bullet and took to my local shop had them replace all three sensors (MAF, up and down stream o2)

CEL is currently off. he said the cats could still be good only a few hwy miles will tell.

also my locker hasn’t been working I narrowed it down to electrical and realized the igreen and white is tore right at the harness. I’m excited I’ll soon have a locker again. Once I find a replacement

How much did they charge you for both sensors and the MAF? Hopefully your light won’t turn on.

I’ll try and justify, I just needed to get it figured out fast, and originally I went there to get cats but they wanted to address the lean problem first, like mentioned here in this thread. So plus side at least he didn’t sell me on cats yet hah..

Ouch! Lol the sensor are extremely easy to swap out pretty much unplug and remove two screws. The MAF sensor as well honestly. How much did they say to drive it for?

Wouldn't say that's too bad for all 3 OEM sensors plus install...the O2s take more time to install than the MAF but all 3 are pretty easy to do. But they definitely aren't cheap

Thanks guys, yea he said drive it for like 25 miles at like 55-60 and come back later Today. After I had dropped it off I started looking up videos and saw how easy it looked. I was hoping if they noticed anything else was wrong or if it wasn’t the sensors It would save me from doing all of them, but at least it’s good for the truck.
