how about the other way around?

    regular - running 91 octane?

would it be the same as premium tune running 91 octane once OL settles in?

also can you explain the tow mode - benefits etc.

Ok so for clarification from what I understand is now That the tune is octane learning it starts at say 90ish octane expected but will easily learn upwards to 93? Reason I ask is here in Alabama it’s 93 octane for premium. Truck runs perfectly fine don’t get me wrong just saying this for clarification as I’ll always be on premium anyway.

guys when you first flash the performance is going to be the worst.
The ECU starts from the most Retarded ignition settings (worst) and works it's way up.

There is a reason for the 500 miles.

would the ECU compensate on the regular tune file when i swap from 87 octane to 91 octane?

reason im asking is - for the most part i run 87 octane but when i tow (600 miles) i would fill up 91 octane for a bit of a performance boost

but if the ECU doesnt benefit on the regular tune for 91 octane - i will just flash the performance tune and run 91 all the time

The ECU can compensate in either direction. Increasing ignition (torque improves) decreasing ignition (torque reduces).

The further the ECU has to decrease, the worse your torque / performance is going to be.
Running on the premium tune and putting 87 in the tank means it has to immediately start reducing.

If you use premium fuel, you can benefit from either file.
If you use regular fuel, you get ZERO benefit from running the premium file.

    Thanks!

From my side of things, I have zero expectations just after a flash. Similar to a cold start, I try to drive normally and let things work themselves out. Then start playing around after the first couple drives? Of course, holding off on any real comments until a tank or two is through.

From that perspective, the tunes always feel very good right off the bat with improvements in every version.

Random idea: Is there any way to estimate OLE timing based on mileage traveled? For example, learning +1 octane every 250 miles, etc...?

Just trying to figure out a creative way to determine the impact of switching fuels. As in, how long (mileage) does it take for the OLE adjustment to occur if/when you switch from 87 to 93, and vice versa?

    @OVTune,

Question for you or anyone else that can answer this. As I do the first 500 miles to let the tune settle, should I avoid using ECT while the tune settles in or does it not matter? Just want to make sure I'm not 'messing anything up' by turning on ECT early on after flashing.

    Thank You, Joe Hwang

I would think, if you have the option too, if you switch fuels you should switch tunes.

I'm doing a trip across the country in two weeks. I currently have a full tank of 93, but plan to switch to 87 for the entire trip, hence my interest in this OLE discussion.

The question is, should I simply switch tunes as you suggest? Or, should I just install the 87 tune now and let everything sort itself out in the software?

It doesn't work by miles driven. 500 is blanket amount because it's setup by load points, RPM, etc over time and is always adjusting.
Our octane learn function is derived from the stock ignition control, which can advance and retard based on learned factors.

if you want it to learn quicker, do several hard runs again and again and again, from idle to rev limit.
But then the transmission side takes longer, so all in all 500 miles it should get there.

you can use ECT, 4Hi, 4Lo, any combination of any buttons. It does not matter.
ECT button forces the transmission to use a single map set so you won't get the transmission settling if you always use ECT though.

    Just flashed 04A61_Reg_33.p5f

I am on 32", so we'll see in a couple hundred miles. Looking forward to my commute home this afternoon.

@OVTune , Thank You! Learning something new everyday! I look forward to getting the VF Tuner when it becomes available to work with this tune.

About 100 miles so far. I’ll hold off on opinions until I hit 500 :)

Same thing happened to me. I don't know what changed, but I did have an update on my PC. Sent my System ID out last week, so just waiting for the new reg file to be sent to me.

How do I use P5fash with flash manager? Every time I try to open it from flash manager it just says ready...on the bottom. Pop up blocker and antivirus is off.
