It's such a pita though having to get the gears set up though. Maybe i should just get a 3rd w/ some 4.88s to swap in for long trips. After going s/c i kind of regret doing 5.29s

I like where your head's at, but it might be difficult to get that setup to work on my prerunner. I have considered a halfway 4wd swap without the front diff/cvs/etc so i could get 2 low, but at that point, it would be stupid not to make it 4wd since the trans has to be replaced

Yeah, gearing setups do take time. I was meaning exclusively swapping the whole 3rd.

weight has little to do with performance. It’s tire diameter that lowers you’re effective gearing, i.e - turning 295s (true 33) is not the same as turning 315s With the same gearing regardless of weight. I have stock size Toyo MT 245s on right now far heavier than stock P rated tires and it feels identical.

as for your rpm - well yes, you’re in a predicament there and that’s why I was as well. 4.88 isn’t enough for 315s IMO, and I didn’t want to run 3k+ at 75mph. Joys of a 2.7 lol.

    agree to disagree

imo unsprung weight is the worst kind of weight you can add to these trucks. Doesnt matter what gears you have, you're going to feel the performance loss of a heavier tire not only in acceleration but braking as well

    Definitely agree to disagree!

If your logic was sound why would anyone regear when jumping to a bigger tire if you can find a wheel/tire setup lighter than stock? You’d still feel the loss of gearing 1000000%. Everyone likes to parrot that bullshit without actually seeing the difference first hand. I mean, who actually gets a 245 MT? Besides me lol.

    my setups:

    stock tires + stock gearing
STT pro 285s + stock gearing
    Toyo MT 245+ stock gearing

285s Is where it got crushed and the setup was hardly heavier than what I have now.

My MPG and acceleration are same as stock weight tires. By your logic that isn’t possible and the “worst thing I can do.” I have no reason to lie - that’s why I’m sticking with these until I decide if 5.29 + 35s is worth the trouble.

    no worries though!!

What aspect ratios are those tires? All the same aspect ratio, or all different so that the overall tire heights are the same?

Far as the gearing, tire size, and weight thing...

Stock 4.10 gears and stock P245/75/r16 tires, drove like stock, street truck, no lift, no armor. Duh.
Stock 4.10 gears and LT254/75/r16 Grabber AT2s, a difference in every aspect, not yuuuge, but different negatively. Braking, cornering (probably no sway bar), acceleration, mpg loss. Had 5100/885 and AAL. Struggled on steep climbs in 4lo even, smoked the clutch. Skids and sliders, rear bumper.
Stock gears still and 255/85/r16 KM2s, replaced my clutch with LCE's. Even more degradation of braking and acceleration. Truck was a bit of a turd and wasn't winning any drag races. Still same suspension, then added Dakar HDs and Fox ext travel IFP in the rear. Added front bumper and winch.
Upgrade to 4.88s, LCE clutch, header, 255s, 5100/885, Dakar HD, Fox ext travel, all the armor, and I felt as though my truck was enough for anything I could want!

The LCE header was put on at some point, can't remember before or after gears.

When I went to 4.88s, all my hopes dreams and wishes came true! What a damn game changer for off road performance! Still a bit much for 5th gear interstate speeds ~75mph, but I wouldn't change a thing.

I've got a real hard time believing that the larger Coopers (notoriously heavier tires vs competitors) are 'hardly heavier' than Toyo 245s.

I'll assume 285/75/r16 and 245/75/r16 sizes per. And that the Toyo is the Open Country.
    STT Pro ~61#
    Toyo MT ~52#

10lbs of added or subtracted rotational mass at each corner makes a difference.

    The 35s I'm looking at weigh in around 63lbs vs my 255 KM2s at 55lbs. 8ply 35 vs 10ply 33

It's not just about weight, but also moment of inertia (how far that weight is from the center of rotation).

Did this this past weekend. Truck is a paper weight now. Gotta find a shop to rebuild my old motor. The one the wrecking yard sold me had a damaged timing cover, so I'm going another route now. Any recommendations for a shop in Texas that does rebuilds? I'd love to have LCE build it, but the idea of shipping it all the way to AZ isnt so appealing

yeah, diameter lol. As I’ve been saying..

most people parrot it’s simply weight

Lol, yeah that’s all I was trying to explain man. I don’t by any means think we should ignore unsprung weight, but the killer is diameter - if you’re gearing doesn’t match up it’s going to feel like a pig.

I mean, look at all the complaints of people saying stock wheels/tires still feels slow lol. Well double OD gears at 3.91 r&p are to blame.

How is the rest of the engine, despite the timing cover? Can you not just swap it over?

    I'm guessing 3rd gen 2.7s MT are 3.91? All the 2nd gen 2.7 MT are 4.10.
