No URD said they were in development for a turbo kit.

Low octane in a high compression engine can cause the fuel to explode from compression before the spark plug fires(commonly called pinging). The more fuel you dump into the combustion chamber, the more likely it is to ping. This causes premature, uneven, and incomplete burning of the fuel. The resulting gunk from incomplete combustion can get on the valves and combustion chamber and cause all sorts of problems.

In modern engines that require high octane, the ECU will sense pinging from incorrect octane being used and retard the timing to prevent engine damage. This reduces horsepower and fuel economy and negates the cost savings of using an incorrect, cheaper, low octane.

Summary. Use the recommended octane for normal driving and one grade up or octane booster for towing or performance driving.

I knew this part, it's the cleaner burning part that I was unaware of

He does say recommended fuel. Therefore go by what manual says. Ive never read it, but I imagine it says 87-89 octane on our stock engine.

again we were talking about the cleanliness of the fuel burning. Not it’s ability to not predetonate.

87 isnt as clean buring as 93. Just as 93 isnt as clean burning as 100. 87 will gunk up your motor much faster than 93 will. 89 is just mixed 87 and 93.

If the engine is not predetonating, using higher octane will not help with cleanliness. Predetonation leads to incomplete burn which leads to build up.

I think the biggest thing that causes build up in an engine is the lack of preventative maintenance. They are so many systems added to an engine that help with pollution that need to be maintained and people ignore. Catalytic converter, PCV system, EGR system and all the others. Even not maintaining your air filter causes internal problems.
I had a 97 Tacoma I only used 87 octane in for over 200 000 miles and when I tore it down to replace a head gasket it looked almost like a new engine inside.

Thank you, that’s what I was getting at. Of course there’s not much research to be found online on this.

I’ve saw where engine engineers for BMW said. With our new technology if the car doesn’t call for 93 there’s no use in it.

I did read Americans wasted an estimated 2+ billion on 93 simply because they do not know there’s no benefit to it. Pulling up to the pump and putting 93 in my corolla will have zero gain for me.

as far as how clean the engine burns and is after 100k or 200k I think depends more on additives brands use than octane.

I agree, I think all gas burns the same as long as it’s burned completely.

paying 20% more for fuel over the life of the engine for 0% gain in economy and 1% maybe longer engine life isn’t worth it. Of course only talking about stock engines that do not have recommended use for 93.

My dad drove dodge trucks all my life and never had a problem because of 87 octane and he had two trucks he had over 400,000 miles on them. Changing plugs and all the other things that need to be done means a lot to how long they last. My dad always told me check the water and oil, the gas will take care of its self, lol.

It has a lot to do with how an automobile is tuned as to how much power they have with different grades. My son and his friends run cars that shake the ground when they go down the track on E85 gas.
